CALVIN SPORTS REPORT WEEKEND WRAP-UP FOR MARCH 15 2003

    BASEBALL

FORT MYERS, FL * Calvin opened its 2003 campaign in winning fashion as the
Knights handed St. Lawrence of New York a 10-5 defeat Saturday night in a
    meeting of NCAA III teams.

Sophomore pitcher Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the hill for Calvin
in its season opener and recorded his 11th career victory, striking out three
batters and walking none. Freshmen Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS),
Brandon Oldenbroek (Unity Christian High School), Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake
Odessa HS) and junior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights HS) came on in relief of
    Deters later in the game.

Calvin collected 10 hits in the victory with junior outfielder Bryce Weston
(Petoskey HS) leading the way with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate that
included an RBI triple and two runs scored. Junior catcher Darrell Heuker
(Unity Christian HS) also performed admirably for the Knights, going 2-for-5 at
the plate with a pair of RBI's doubles and two runs scored.

Calvin returns to action on Monday when it faces nationally-ranked Aurora
University (IL) in a double-header in Fort Myers. An NCAA III Tournament
participant a year ago, Aurora is ranked eighth in the NCAA III pre-season
top-25 poll by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The doubleheader is
scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. Monday morning.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

SAMFORD, AL * Throughout his collegiate career, Calvin high jumper Cameron
Baron has set his sights on one of the oldest records in the Calvin record
books. Established in 1989 by All-American Dan Owen, the Calvin high jump
record stands at 6-10 ½. On Saturday, Baron nearly erased the 13-year old mark
as he posted a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying jump of 6-10 ¼
at the Samford Bulldog Invitational. The jump was a career-best for Baron who
earned All-America honors in the high jump at the 2001 NCAA III Championships.

Baron's high jump mark was one of five NCAA III provisional qualifying
performances turned in by the Calvin men's track and field team on Saturday
at the unscored invitational hosted by Samford University. It was also one of
two provisional qualifying marks in the field events as sophomore Nate Meckes
(Westland Lutheran HS) turned in a career-best and NCAA III provisional
qualifying mark of 51-9 ¼ in winning the shot put.

Calvin's other three provisional qualifying marks came in the 5,000 meters
as senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, ON) took first with a time of 14:41.86 with
junior Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) taking second (14:43.10) and junior David
Haagsma (South Christian HS) placing third (14:54.99).
In the 10,000 meters, Calvin junior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) captured
first place with a time of 31:53.36 while sophomore Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH)
    took second in 33:05.61.

The first place throw by Meckes in the shot put was part of a standout day for
the sophomore thrower as he also took fifth in the discus (138-1) and fourth in
the javelin (162-3). Meckes was part of a 1-3-5 Calvin finish in the shot put
as senior Nick VanderPlas (McBain Christian HS) took third (48-2) and senior
Shawgy Frimpong (West Orange, NJ) fifth (47-3 ½). Other highlights included
senior Jon Hutchful (Accra, Ghana) taking second in the triple jump (44-8 ¼)
and fourth in the long jump (20-3); freshman Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA)
placing third in the discus (140-5) and freshman Jason Koning (South Christian
HS) taking second in the pole vault (13-5 ¼). In addition, senior Ben Talsma
(Western Michigan Christian HS) placed fifth in the long jump (20-2 ¼), fifth
in the javelin (158-9) and eighth in the discus (129-0).

On the women's side, Calvin posted three NCAA III provisional qualifying
performances. Calvin received two of the provisional qualifying mark in the
10,000 meters as junior Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) took first
(36:38.30) while junior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) placed second
    (37:14.20).

Calvin's other provisional qualifying performance came from junior Katie
Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) as she took third in the discus with
a throw of 145-8. Corner was also part of a 3-4-5-6 Calvin finish in the shot
put with Corner taking third (40-6 ¼), senior Liz Frens (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) taking fourth (40-2 ¾), senior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) taking fifth (40-0) and sophomore Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
    taking sixth (38-1 ½).

Sophomore Sue Abbring also had a sizzling afternoon as she placed 11th in the
100 meters (12.74) and fourth in the 200 meters (25.69) with both times just
missing NCAA III provisional qualifying times. Senior Annie VanderLaan (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) took seventh in the 100 meter hurdles (15.37) and ninth in
    the 200 meters (26.32).

Other highlights included sophomore Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) taking
second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.93), senior Jodi VerMeulen (Holland
Christian HS) winning the 5,000 meters (18:11.42), freshman Camille Medema
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking third in the 1,500 meters (4:48.19),
freshman Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second in the pole
vault (9-6 ¼) and sophomore Kristen Carlson (Encinitas, CA) taking sixth in the
    long jump (15-11 ½).

Both Calvin track and field teams will spend the week training in Gulf Shores,
Alabama. On March 22, the two squads will compete at the Emory Invitational in
    Atlanta, Georgia.
