     Calvin Sending Five to NCAA III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships

    Calvin will be sending five individuals to the NCAA III Swimming and Diving
    Championships, scheduled to be held March 20-22 at Emory University in Atlanta,
    Georgia.

    Scheduled to compete for Calvin at the NCAA III Championships are seniors A.J.
    Penninga and Ryan Johnson, junior Brad White and sophomores Peter Boumgarden
    and Ryan Preston.

    A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
    Penninga will be making his third straight appearance at the NCAA III
    Championships. A year ago, Penninga was a member of three All-America Calvin
    relay teams (200 medley, 400 medley, 800 freestyle) at the national
    championships and three honorable mention All-America relay teams (200
    freestyle, 400 freestyle). In addition, he placed ninth individually in the
    200 freestyle to garner honorable mention All-America recognition. At the 2001
    championships, he was a part of Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team that placed
    seventh to earn All-America accolades. This past month, Penninga earned a spot
    on the All-MIAA team for the fourth straight year, becoming the sixth swimmer
    in Calvin men's swimming and diving history to do so.

    Penninga is slated to compete in the 200 IM as well as the 100 and 200
    freestyle events. He is seeded 41st in the 200 IM (1:59.34), 27th in the 100
    freestyle (46.82) and 17th in the 200 freestyle (1:42.01). In addition, he is
    scheduled to fill legs on Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team (seeded 20th in
    1:25.41), 400 freestyle relay team (seeded sixth in 3:05.39), 800 freestyle
    relay team (seeded fourth in 6:49.95) and 400 medley relay team (seeded 10th in
    3:27.88).

    Johnson is from Grand Haven and is a graduate of Grand Haven High School.
    Johnson will be making his first trip to the NCAA III Championships. He is
    scheduled to compete in the 200 IM, 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. He is
    seeded 32nd in the 200 IM (1:56.02), 29th in the 100 butterfly (51.48) and 23rd
    in the 200 freestyle (1:42.74). He is also slated to compete in Calvin's 200
    medley (seeded 18th in 1:35.83), 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle
    relay teams. This past month, Johnson was named to the All-MIAA team for the
    first time in his career.
     
    A native of Traverse City and a graduate of Dayton Christian (OH) High School,
    White is making his third straight appearance at the NCAA III Championships.
    At the 2001 national meet, White took 11th in the 50 and 100 freestyle events
    to earn honorable mention All-America recognition in both events. He also was
    a part of Calvin's 800 freestyle All-America relay team and Calvin's
    honorable mention All-America 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. At the 2002
    NCAA III Championships, he took 12th in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. He
    also filled legs on Calvin's All-America 200 and 400 medley and 800 freestyle
    relay teams and on Calvin's honorable mention All-America 200 and 400
    freestyle relay teams.

    White is scheduled to compete in the 50 freestyle where he is seeded 25th
    (21.29), the 100 backstroke where he is seeded 19th (52.17) and the 100
    freestyle where he is seeded 11th (46.25). White will also swim on all five of
    Calvin's relay teams. This past month, White was named to the All-MIAA team
    for the third straight year. At the MIAA Championships, he captured the 100
    freestyle to claim his first individual MIAA title.

    Preston is from Richmond, Indiana. He is a graduate of Richmond High School.
    He is making his second straight trip to the NCAA III Championships and is
    scheduled to fill legs on Calvin's 200 and 400 medley relay teams. At the
    2002 NCAA III Championships, he filled the breaststroke leg on Calvin's
    All-America 200 and 400 medley relay teams.

    Boumgarden is from Naperville, Illinois, and is a graduate of Naperville North
    High School. Boumgarden is making his second trip to the NCAA III
    Championships. At the 2002 national meet, he took second in the 100 butterfly,
    missing an individual national title by less than two-tenths of a second. He
    also took 14th in the 200 butterfly to earn honorable mention All-America
    honors and filled legs on all five of Calvin's relay teams.

    Boumgarden will again compete in the 100 and 200 butterfly events and 200 IM.
    He is seeded second in the 100 butterfly (49.65), 15th in the 200 butterfly
    (1:53.53) and 17th in the 200 IM (1:54.92). He is also scheduled to compete in
    all five of Calvin's relays. This past month, Boumgarden was named to the
    All-MIAA team for the second straight year. At the MIAA Championships, he
    claimed league crowns in the 100 and 200 butterfly and filled a leg on
    Calvin's MIAA champion 800 freestyle relay team.

    At the 2002 NCAA III Championships, Calvin posted its highest team finish,
    placing ninth with 136.5 points. Calvin was one of three MIAA schools to
    finish in the top 10 at the national meet as Hope took fifth (262 points) and
    Kalamazoo sixth (229 points).
