CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2003 (Part One)
MEN�S CLUB ICE HOCKEY
MUSKEGON � Calvin has advanced to the semifinals of the ACHA Division III
National Championships.
The Knights earned a spot in tonight�s semifinal with a 4-0 victory over
Georgetown University this morning.
Calvin (18-5) will play the winner of Friday�s quarterfinal contest between
Muskegon Community College and Penn State Berks. Calvin�s semifinal game is
set for 7:15 p.m. at the Lakeshore Sports Center in Muskegon. To get to the
Lakeshore Sports Center, take exit 1A off of US31 as you enter the city of
Muskegon.
In its quarterfinal victory over Georgetown University Friday morning, Calvin
used its �Ontario Production Line� to pull away as freshman Nick Verkuyl
(Whitby, Ontario) and sophomore Aaron Okkema (Ancaster, Ontario) collected two
goals apiece.
Freshman David Veeneman (Grand Rapids Christian HS) collected two assists for
the Knights while sophomore Isaac Hoogland (Grand Rapids Christian HS),
freshman Nate Heuker (South Christian HS) and freshman Dan DeKorne also
recorded one assist apiece.
Calvin outshot the Hoyas 42-26 with senior goaltender Brad Kirker (Seattle,
WA) collecting 26 saves in gaining the shutout win.
Calvin�s game against Georgetown began at 8:00 a.m. but according to head
coach Mike Petrusma, the Knights were ready to play. �I think the boys
definitely ate their Wheaties early this morning because they were ready to
go,� said Petrusma. �We played with passion and desire right from the
get-go. We�re building momentum and we hope to keep it going tonight.
