CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 7, 2003
MUSKEGON -- A potential matchup in the national championship game against rival
Hope will have to wait for another year as Calvin suffered a 7-5 defeat to host
Muskegon Community Collee Friday night in the ACHA Division III Semifinals at
the Lakeshore Sports Center.
Calvin will now play in the third place game at 2:45 p.m. Saturday against the
University of Georgia. Hope defeated Georgia 2-1 in overtime in Friday's other
semifinal to advance to the national championship game Saturday night against
Muskegon Community College. Both games Saturday will be played at the L.C.
Walker Ice Arena in downtown Muskegon.
Calvin (18-6) carried the play for one period of play as the Knights were able
to build a 4-1 lead behind two first period goals from freshman Nick VerKuy
(Whitby, Ontario) and one apiece from freshman Max Sieplinga (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) and freshman Dan DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
The Jayhawks got back into the game with a pair of second period power-play
goals as the Knights were shorthanded throughout the period due to a rash of
penalties.
Muskegon Community College then opened the third period with three more goals
to build a 6-4 lead. Sieplinga answered with his second goal of the game for
Calvin to cut the lead to one but an empty-net tally in the closing seconds
sealed the win for Muskegon Community College.
Calvin is making its first appearance in the ACHA National Tournament since the
1992-93 season when the Knights finished third in Albany, New York.
