CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 24, 2003
MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the first time in his career, Calvin junior Kevin Broene has been named MIAA
Player of the Week in men's basketball.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
Broene shares the award with fellow sharp-shooter Steve Brooks of Adrian this
week. Combined, Broene and Brooks combined for 11 three-point field goals on
Saturday in a 77-63 Calvin victory at Adrian. Brooks was 5-of-8 from long range
in the contest while Broene was 6-of-8 from beyond the arc as he finished the
game with a season-high 28 points, one short of matching a career-high.
In a 95-72 victory over Alma Wednesday night, Broene scored 20 points including
a 4-for-6 performance from three-point territory.
Over the course of the week, Broene was 16-of-24 from the floor and 10-of-14
from three-point range. In 57 minutes of action, Broene committed only one
turnover. He was also credited with 10 rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Broene is averaging 15.1 points and 2.9 rebounds a game while also shooting 45.1
percent from three-point territory with a team-leading 55 three-point field
goals.
Broene is the second player from Calvin to receive MIAA Player of the Week
honors in men's basketball this year as senior teamamate Jeremy Veenstra was
previously honored this year on two separate occasions.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Olivet at 7:30 p.m. in
a first round MIAA Tournament game at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Calvin is the
third seed for the MIAA Tournament and will carry a 15-10 overall record into
Wednesday's game. Olivet is the sixth seed and is 11-14 overall.
In winning Saturday's game at Adrian, Calvin reached the 15-win plateau for the
19th consecutive year.
