    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 22, 2003 PART TWO

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

    ANN ARBOR - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams closed out
    their indoor campaigns on Saturday at the Harold Silverston Invitational at the
    University of Michigan.

    In the women's competition, junior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian
    HS) and sophomore Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) had strong performances.
    VanderLaan took third in the 200 meters (26.78) and 60 meter hurdles (9.13).
    Abbring took second in the 200 meters (26.57) and fourth in the 60 meter dash
    (8.18).

    They also ran legs on Calvin's 4 x 400 meter relay team that took third with
    a time of 4:04.74. Joining them on the relay were freshman Camille Medema
    (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Laura Hamilton (). In the 3,000
    meters, Calvin received a 3-4 performance from juniors Sarah Hastings (Traverse
    City Central HS) and Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) as Hastings took
    third with a time of 10:28.59 and Hastings fourth with a time of 10:29.93.

    In the shot put, Calvin received strong efforts from junior Katie Corner (Grand
    Rapids Catholic Central HS) and senior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian
    HS) with VanDenBosch and Corner taking sixth and seventh respectively with
    throws of 41-4 ¼. Senior Liz Frens (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also 10th
    with a throw of 39-7.

    In the long jump, Calvin picked up three top 10 efforts as freshman Christine
    Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) was sixth (16-9 ¼), VanderLaan seventh (16-8) and
    sophomore Marielle Zylstra (Whitinsville, MA) eighth (16-2 ¼).

    Freshman Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) added a seventh place finish
    in the pole vault (10-0).

    In the men's competition, Calvin received a pair of solid performances from
    senior Jonathon Hutchful (Accra, Ghana) as he took fifth in the triple jump
    (44-5 ½) and 12th in the long jump (20-9 ¾). Freshman Jason Koning (South
    Christian HS) also had a strong performance in the pole vault, taking ninth with
    a vault of 14-0.

    In the shot put, Calvin received top 10 performances from sophomore Nate Meckes
    (Westland Lutheran) and senior Nick VanderPlas (McBain Christian HS) as Meckes
    was sixth (49-6 ½) and VanderPlas ninth (46-4 ¼).

    In the one-mile run, Calvin received a trio of top 10 performances led by
    sophomore Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) who was fifth (4:23.18), junior Tim Avery
    (Rochester, NY) who was eighth (4:25.06) and junior Kyle Carrick () who was 10th
    (4:27.72).

    In the 4 x 400 meter relay, the Calvin quartet of sophomore Rueben Sportel
    (South Christian HS), freshman Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids Christian HS),
    sophomore Chris Friebel (Shelby, OH) and senior Steve Abbring (Highland, IN)
    took fifth with a time of 3:32.83. Sportel also took 10th in the 60 meter
    hurdles (8.74).

    MEN'S TENNIS

    Calvin opened its season with a second place finish at the Grand Rapids City
    Tournament, notching its highest tournament finish in several years. Aquinas
    took the championship with a total of 17 points at the two-day competition held
    at the Riverview Racket Club while Calvin was second with nine points, Grand
    Valley third with six points and Grand Rapids Community College fourth with four
    points.

    In the singles competition, Calvin reached the championship finals in four of
    six flights. Calvin also reached the finals in two of the three doubles
    flights.

    Aquinas captured five of the six singles flights and all three of the doubles
    flights.

    Calvin will now prepare for a non-conference dual match against Ripon College
    next Friday in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
