CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, FEB. 22 2003
MEN'S BASKETBALL
ADRIAN - The Calvin Fieldhouse will have another game this year as the Knights
secured homecourt advantage for the first round of the MIAA Tournament next
Wednesday with a 77-63 triumph at Adrian Saturday afternoon.
The victory lifted Calvin into a tie for third place in the final MIAA regular
season standings with Kalamazoo at 7-5. It also allowed the Knights to avoid a
fourth place tie with Adrian which was looking for its first regular season
sweep over Calvin since the 1987-88 season. Calvin then won a coin-flip
Saturday night with Kalamazoo to gain the third seed for the upcoming MIAA
Tournament. The flip was one of two held Saturday night with Albion winning a
flip with Hope for the top seed and home court for the MIAA Tournament
semifinals and championship game.
As the third seed, Calvin will host sixth-seeded Olivet Wednesday night in a
first round game at the Calvin Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m. The Calvin/Olivet winner
will face the winner of the Alma/Hope winner Friday night at 5:45 pm in the MIAA
Tournament semifinals at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium. Albion will await the
outcome of Wednesday's Adrian/Kalamazoo contest and face the winner Friday night
in the second semifinal game, slated to start at 8:30 p.m. Friday's winners
will play in the MIAA Tournament Championship game Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
An Adrian victory Saturday would have forced the Knights to travel back to
Adrian for a first round game on Wednesday but the Knights made sure no return
was necessary with a strong second half.
Trailing 31-30 at halftime, Calvin used a 16-4 run in the opening four minutes
of the second half to build a 49-37 lead. Adrian (12-13 overall, 5-7 MIAA)
would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way. A 9-2 Calvin spurt
inside the final five minutes of regulation sealed the win as the Knights
finished the second half with a blistering 63.6 percent shooting clip.
Junior wing Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was superb for the Knights
as he poured in a season-high 28 points that included six three-point field
goals. Broene was 8-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line
and added seven rebounds and two steals. Junior forward Chris Prins (Escondido,
CA) also had a strong afternoon for the Knights with 17 points and five rebounds
with junior guard Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) chipping in with 12 points
off the bench.
Adrian was led by Steve Brooks who pumped in 26 points with Dan Walter adding
11 and Adam Novak 10.
Calvin shot 55.8 percent overall and held a 38-21 rebounding advantage. Adrian
shot 36.4 percent overall including just 33.3 percent in the second half.
In improving to 15-10 overall with Saturday's victory, Calvin reached the
15-win plateau for the 19th consecutive year.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
GRAND RAPIDS – Calvin closed out the MIAA regular season on a winning note as
the Knights secured a 59-54 victory over visiting Adrian Saturday afternoon at
the Calvin Fieldhouse. The victory allowed the Knights to remain tied with
Olivet for fifth place in the final MIAA regular season standings and allowed
the Knights (15-10 overall, 6-8 MIAA) to gain the fifth seed for the MIAA
Tournament next week due to a head-to-head tiebreaker edge over Olivet. Calvin
will travel to Albion next Tuesday for a first round MIAA Tournament game slated
to start at 7:30 p.m. at Kresge Gymnasium. The game will be broadcast via real
audio on the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports
In its victory over Adrian Saturday, Calvin rolled out to a 35-22 halftime lead
and hung on down the stretch.
Playing in her final regular season home game, Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
Christian HS) moved into sole possession of first place on the Calvin career
list for steals as she boosted her career total to 272 with four steals in
Saturday's contest. Dyk had entered the game tied for the all-time lead with
1991 Calvin graduate Sarah Ondersma-Decker. Dyk finished the game with seven
points, six assists, four steals, one block and three rebounds without
committing a turnover in 30 minutes of play.
Also playing in her final regular season home game, senior forward Emily Beard
(Southfield Christian HS
) had a strong game Saturday with 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocked
shots. With her effort, Beard boosted her career rebound total to 547 boards,
just four behind 1994 Calvin graduate Pam Wubben who sits in fourth place on the
Calvin career list.
In the first half of Saturday's game, Calvin used a 10-0 run to build a 21-10
lead with 12:54 left in the half. Leading 29-22 with just over two minutes
remaining, Calvin then scored the final six points off the half including a
buzzer-beating turnaround by Dyk to vault the Knights into a 35-22 halftime
lead.
Adrian (10-15 overall, 3-11 MIAA) refused to give up and cut the Calvin lead
down to single digits in the opening six minutes of the second half. The
Bulldogs continued to whittle away at the lead until they trailed by four at
53-49 with 1:53 left on the clock. Beard then stepped up and delivered a clutch
jumper from the right elbow to give the Knights a 55-49 advantage. After an
Adrian basket inside, Calvin junior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian HS) came up
with another clutch hoop, converting a put-back in traffic with 37 seconds
remaining. Dyk then swished a pair of free throws to give Calvin a 59-51 lead
with 21 seconds left. A three-pointer by Adrian senior Sarah Vincke in the
final second of play provided the final five-point margin of victory.
Beard was part of a strong contingent of post players that forced Adrian to
work hard throughout the afternoon. Another catalyst for Calvin inside was
junior center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) who collected her fifth
double-double of the season and sixth of her career with 16 points and 12
rebounds while dishing out four assists and blocking two shots. Junior center
Kara Kuiper (Unity Christian HS) added six points off the bench while sophomore
power forward Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) added four points and
one rebound. Sophomore point guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) also had
seven points and two steals for the Knights.
Adrian was led by Vincke who pumped in a game-high 20 points while seniors
Allison Keebaugh and Lisa Butts had 10 points apiece with Keebaugh grabbing a
game-high 13 rebounds.
Calvin held a 48-43 rebounding advantage. Neither team shot the ball well with
Calvin shooting 34.3 percent overall and Adrian 35.0 percent overall.
