CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2003
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
ALBION – Calvin’s bid for a first round MIAA Tournament win on the road
came up short as the Knights suffered a season-ending 72-67 defeat at Albion
Tuesday night.
With the win, Albion advances to the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday night
to face undefeated Hope at 7:30 p.m at the Hope Dow Center.
Calvin held control of the game for large portions of the game but failed to
close out the final five minutes in each half, allowing the Britons to pull
ahead and gain the win.
Calvin held a 22-13 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first
half but the host Britons outscored the Knights 14-4 over the final 4:05 of the
half including a 9-0 stretch in the final 2:31 to gin a 27-26 halftime lead.
Calvin took its first lead of the second half at 38-37 on a three-pointer from
sophomore Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) with 13:58 remaining. Albion
(15-11) would then gain a 46-44 advantage on a pair of Sarah Caskey free throws
at the 8:55 mark but McDonald put the Knights back up 47-46 with her third
triple of the game. Another triple from McDonald gave the Knights a 54-50 lead
with 5:04 left.
Calvin (15-11) went cold over the next three-and-a-half minutes however while
Albion heated up ripping off 10 unanswered points to take a 60-54 lead with
1:31 remaining. A three-pointer by Albion sophomore Vanessa Thompson provided
the go-ahead points for the Britons in the run as it gave Albion a 56-54 lead
with 3:46 remaining. Albion would never trail again.
McDonald broke the Calvin drought with her fifth and final triple of the game
at the 1:22 mark to cut the gap to 60-57.
Albion sealed the game however by converting 10-of-10 at the line over the
final 38 seconds of the game.
McDonald led Calvin in a losing effort with 22 points while senior Tricia Dyk
(Western Michigan Christian High School) closed out her career with 13 points.
Senior Emily Beard (Southfield Christian HS) added eight points and three
rebounds in her final performance in a Calvin uniform, allowing her to move
into a tie with 1994 Calvin graduate Pam Wubben for fourth place on the Calvin
career rebound list with 550 caroms. Albion was paced by Caskey who pumped in
a game-high 25 points including a perfect 13-of-13 showing at the charity
stripe. Thompson was also lethal to Calvin’s hopes as she poured in 24
points including four three-point shots.
Calvin finished with a 44.0 percent field goal performance but committed 18
turnovers which resulted in 20 Albion points. Albion also outrebounded Calvin
35-29 with Caskey leading the Britons with nine boards. Albion shot just 39.6
percent from the field but outscored the Knights by eight points at the free
throw line as the Britons were 23-of-28 (.821) at the charity stripe while
Calvin was 15-of-19 (.789) at the line.
With its final record of 15-11, Calvin finished with its first winning season
since the 1999-2000 season.
