CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 17, 2003
CALVIN ICE HOCKEY TEAM HEADED TO NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
For the first time since the 1992-93 season, the Calvin club ice hockey team is
headed to the American College National Ice Hockey Championships.
At 15-5, the Knights are the second seed out of the Central Region with 21-4
Hope the top seed from the region.
Calvin will be one of 16 collegiate "club-level" teams competing in the
three-day Division III tournament scheduled to be held Thursday-Saturday, March
6-8 at the L.W. Walker Arena in Muskegon.
Calvin will open tournament play against the University of Wyoming March 6 at
2:45 p.m. A year ago, Wyoming earned national runner-up honors. In 2001, the
Cowboys captured the national championship.
Other teams schedule to compete in the three-day tournament include Wagner
College, College of the Canyons, Virginia Commonwealth, Arizona State "B",
Tennessee, Georgia, Rutgers-Camden, Georgia Tech, Penn State-Berks, Slippery
Rock, Georgetown, Robert Morris and host Muskegon Community College.
Calvin recently finished second in the Michigan College Hockey Tournament,
bowing to Hope 4-2 in the championship game Saturday after defeating Muskegon
Community College 13-1 Friday night.
Calvin is led by freshman forward Max Sieplinga of Grand Rapids Christian High
School who led the MCHA in scoring and was voted league MVP. Sieplinga currently
has 23 goals and 16 assists on the year and is ranked second nationally in
points-per-game with an average of 3.25 points-per-game.
Sieplinga is one of six Grand Rapids Christian High School graduates on the
Calvin roster. Other Grand Rapids Christian graduates include freshman Sam
Tomaro, senior Brett VerKaik, junior John DeKorne. and freshman Brian DeKorne.
Other local graduates include sophomore Justin Gritter of Holland Christian High
School, freshman Nate Heuker of South Christian High School and sophomore Jason
Kool of Wyoming Tri-unity Christian High School.
In its 1992-93 appearance at the national tournament in Albany, Calvin took
third place under the leadership of head coach Mike Petrusma who has returned to
the helm of the Calvin club ice hockey program this year after a seven-year
absence.

Calvin College senior Joel Klooster is one of the featured subjects in the

A native of Chatham, Ontario, and a graduate of Chatham Christian High School,
Klooster will be a fifth-year senior on the Calvin men's track and field team
this spring. A year ago, Klooster earned national runner-up honors in the
10,000 and 5,000 meter runs and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner in
men's track and field.
A three-time All-American in track and field and a two-time All-American in
