CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 15, 2003
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING
MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL REPORT
HOLLAND – Despite seeing Calvin’s two-year reign as MIAA women’s swimming
and diving champion come to an end, Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos had plenty
of reason to smile on Saturday night at the conclusion of the MIAA Swimming and
Diving Championships at the Holland Aquatic Center.
Over the course of the evening, Gelderloos saw his men’s and women’s teams
post four individual MIAA titles that included one MIAA record performance. In
addition, Calvin also came up with one relay championship Saturday night.
When all was said and done Saturday night, the Calvin women had finished second
with 521.5 points, 61.5 points behind first place Hope. In the men’s
competition, Calvin took third for the sixth consecutive year but also posted a
school record total of 418.5 points, reaching a goal of 400 points or more at
the league meet that Gelderloos had established for his team before the season
began. Defending champion Kalamazoo once again finished in the top spot,
posting a first place total of 660 points while Hope was second with 507
points.
On the women’s side, Calvin senior Katie Nagelkirk of Holland Christian High
School and freshman Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School both closed out
sensational three-days of competition as Nagelkirk took first place in the 100
freestyle with a school, MIAA record and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of
52.20 while Johnson captured the 200 butterfly with a school and NCAA III
conditional qualifying time of 2:10.76. The finishes marked the third
individual titles of the meet for both Nagelkirk and Johnson as Nagelkirk had
previously won the 50 and 200 freestyle events while Johnson had won the 200 and
400 IM events. Nagelkirk’s victory in the 100 freestyle marked the third
straight year she has claimed first place in the event at the MIAA
Championships. It shattered the previous MIAA record of 52.35 set by Erinn
VanAuken of Hope in 1999 and also eclipsed Nagelkirk’s own school record of
52.31 set last year at the NCAA III Championships.
Nagelkirk used an explosive start to propel herself to a lead in the 100
freestyle that she would never relinquish. Conversely, Johnson used another
powerful finish to claim victory in the 200 butterfly as she trailed Meagan
O’Neil of Hope heading into the last turn but pulled away in the final 25
yards to claim the win by less than four-tenths of a second. Her time broke the
previous school record of 2:11.384 set by Calvin All-American Kate Shaughnessy
in 1994.
Nagelkirk then led off Calvin’s 400 freestyle relay that captured first place
with an NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 3:34.66. She was joined on the
relay by senior Anne Kuiper (Houghton HS), freshman Jen Kool (Holland Christian
HS) and Johnson. It marked the second straight MIAA title in the event for the
Calvin women. Kool added a 10th place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time
of 55.37.
Kuiper also had a strong swim in the 200 breaststroke as she placed second with
a time of 2:31.26. Kuiper was one of five Calvin swimmers to score in the event
as junior Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) was third (2:32.05), freshman Laura
Miersma (Holland Christian HS) seventh (2:34.74), senior Deb Knott (Holland
Christian HS) 11th (2:37.88) and senior Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL) 12th
(2:38.04).
Senior Jenny Los (Holland Christian HS) also had a big evening as she placed
fifth in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:30.31 and less than 20 minutes
later, proceeded to take eighth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:19.48.
Los was part of a 4-5 Calvin finish in the 1,650 as freshman Lynn Visser
(Jenison HS) was fourth in 18:20.75 while senior Allison Gliesman (Macomb) was
ninth (19:38.79) and freshman Bekah Sage (Seymour, IN) 10th. Gliesman also
pulled a 1,650 freestyle-200 backstroke double as she placed sixth in the 200
backstroke with a time of 2:19.66.
In the one-meter diving competition, Calvin junior Sara terHaar (Bradenton, FL)
took third with a score of 356.80 while sophomore Anna Battoclette (Cincinnati,
OH) was fourth (354.70), freshman Julie Erickson (Libertyville, IL) seventh
(306.95) and freshman Jodie Offringa (Unity Christian HS) eighth (304.45).
“I could not have asked anything more from my team,” said Gelderloos.
“They all swam great. Hope was just better and I congratulate them on a
championship well earned but I also congratulate my team for an excellent
performance.’
“Katie and Abby were exceptional again tonight,” continued Gelderloos.
“Katie was ready to go and it showed with her performance. Abby has nerves
of steel and her competitive fire showed up once again in that last 25.”
In the men’s competition, Calvin received MIAA championship performances from
junior Brad White of Traverse City, and sophomore Peter Boumgarden of
Naperville, Illinois. Although close on several occasions during his first two
years of collegiate competition, White had never won an individual MIAA title
until Saturday night when he blasted his way to a first place and NCAA III
conditional qualifying time of 46.49. Also coming up with a standout
performance for the Knights in the 100 was senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) who placed fourth with an NCAA III conditional qualifying time of
46.82. In addition, senior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS) was seventh with a
time of 47.30.
“It was awesome to see Brad finally get an MIAA title,” said Gelderloos.
“He has been one of the best swimmers in the league over the last three
years but a first place swim had always eluded him here and there. I know he is
very happy with his performance and I am happy for him.”
In the 200 butterfly, Boumgarden repeated as MIAA champion with an NCAA III
conditional qualifying time of 1:53.53, missing his own school record by eight
hundredths of a second while finishing nearly four seconds ahead of his nearest
competitor. Sophomore Peter Daining (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a
strong swim for the Knights in the 200 butterfly, finishing eighth with a time
of 2:08.67.
“That was another great performance by Peter Boumgarden,” remarked
Gelderloos. “He is setting himself up well for nationals next month. I was
also very pleased with Peter Daining. That was a very solid performance.”
In the 200 backstroke, Calvin scored a number of points with a 5-7-8 finish
with senior Jake VanderPlas (Palo Alto, CA) taking fifth (2:02.02), freshman
Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) taking seventh (2:00.70) and sophomore Dan
VanderHeide (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking eighth (2:06.08).
In the 200 breaststroke, Calvin had three individuals score as senior Kevin
Katerberg (Dayton, OH) was fifth (2:16.05), sophomore Ryan Preston (Richmond,
IN) seventh (2:14.31) and sophomore Chris Sveen (Wheaton, IL) 12th (2:28.32).
In the 1,650 freestyle, Calvin had two individuals score in the consolation
finals as senior Dan Hekman (Calimesa, CA) was eighth (17:11.79) and sophomore
Brian Katerberg (Dayton, OH) 11th (18:40.70).
Calvin’s 400 freestyle relay team closed out the evening with a third place
time of 3:05.39.
