CALVIN COLLEGE SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2003
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Grand Rapids – The Knights used their league bye to break the chains of a
two-game losing streak in defeating Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (9-17) 88-55.
Calvin (13-10) had lost four of its last five, but was able to control the game
from the beginning thanks to junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) who
scored the first six points of the game on three-pointers. The Knights were
able to extend their lead and half-way through the first half held a 26-12 edge,
aided by a 10-0 run spanning four minutes and seeing five different players
score. The Knights did not let up and continued to increase the margin, which
reached 27 points when freshman Joel Hoekstra (Unity Christian) drained a three
with 3:15 remaining. St. Mary’s hit a three of their own in the last :30 of
the first half to make the score 47-23 and cut the deficit to 24.
St. Mary’s quickly began cutting into the lead by scoring five points in the
first minute of second-half action. Senior Rob Dykstra (Tri-Unity Christian)
scored on a lay-up to momentarily stop the skid, but St. Mary’s would not go
away. They soon went on an 11-0 run over three minutes to cut the lead down to
single digits with 13:03 remaining in the game. Calvin coach Kevin VandeStreek
called a timeout to regroup his team, and that he did. Calvin quickly scored
the next six points to return the lead to 15 points at 58-43. St. Mary’s was
again able to cut the lead back down to 10 with 8:48 on the clock, but that was
the closest they would come. By the end of the game the Knights had rebuilt
their halftime lead and then some to finish ahead by 33 points in the 88-55
blowout.
Broene led the Knights in scoring by droping 17 points on 5-9 shooting. Senior
Jeremy Veenstra (Western Michigan Christian) closely followed Broene with 16
points and led the Knights in rebounding with nine. Veenstra also added four
blocks and two steals to his line. Dykstra added ten points, eight boards, and
three steals while junior Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian) compiled four assists
and three steals.
Calvin saw a couple of firsts today when junior Mike Natelborg (Illiana
Christian) made his starting debut and freshman Andy Draayer (Denver Christian)
made his varsity debut. Natelborg scored eight points and grabbed two rebounds,
while Draayer hit one of his two shot attempts to score three points and snag
two rebounds.
The Knights will be back in action this Wednesday evening at the Calvin
Fieldhouse to play host to the Alma College Scots at 7:30p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Notre Dame, IN – After spinning its wheels in its last two games, Calvin came
out firing on all cylinders on Saturday afternoon, downing St. Mary’s College
60-48. The win holds Calvin in a fifth place tie in the MIAA (5-7) and sets up
an all-important showdown with fourth place Alma College on Wednesday night in
the Cappaert Gymnasium.
The Knights fell in the hole early 7-3, but were able to claw their way out
using stifling defense and capitalizing on St. Mary’s turnovers. Calvin then
tied the ballgame at 17 apiece with a made jumper by sophomore Kristen McDonald
(West Catholic) at the 8:30 mark of the first half. A late field goal by St.
Mary’s inched them closer as Calvin went into intermission clinging to a 25-24
lead.
A determined Calvin squad exited the locker with a defensive mindset. After St.
Mary’s scored a two-point field goal at the 10:12 mark the Knights held the
Belles to no field goals for the next 7:12 of the second half. During that span
Calvin outscored the hosts 18-8 and built a lead that they would not relinquish.
The story of the game was turnovers as Calvin (14-9 overall, 5-7 MIAA) turned
the ball over 15 times and the Belles were guilty 25 times. The Knights
outscored the Belles 26-8 in points off of turnovers. St. Mary’s (5-18
overall, 1-11 MIAA) outrebounded the Knights 42-38, but Calvin held the
advantage in shooting, connecting on a 41.7 percent clip while the Belles shot
30.9 percent from the floor.
Senior power forward Emily Beard (Southfield Christian) led the Knights pouring
in 19 points and pulling down a team-high seven rebounds. Juniors Kim Wolthuis
(South Christian) and Andrea MacDonald (Allendale) each chipped in ten points,
while MacDonald also collected six rebounds and four blocks.
As noted above the Knight’s next game will be against Alma College on
Wednesday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m.
