CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 14, 2003
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor campaigns
in strong fashion Friday as both teams competed at the Laker Lint Challenge at
Grand Valley State University.
In the women's competition, Calvin posted three first place finishes with senior
Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian HS) winning the shot put (41-7),
senior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) finishing in a tie for first
in the 55-meter hurdles (8.48) and junior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central
HS) winning the 5,000 meters (18:30.00).
VanDenBosch helped figure in a 1-3-4 Calvin finish in the shot put as junior
Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) was third (40-8) and senior Liz
Frens (Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (39-10 1/2). VanderLaan added a fifth
place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 26.90 while sophomore teammate Sue
Abbring (Highland, IN) took second in the event with a time of 26.49. Also
earning second place finishes were freshman Camille Medema (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) in the one-mile run (5:22.00) and freshman Missy Smith (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) in the pole vault (10-6).
In the men's competition, Calvin received first place performances from
sophomore Andy Yazzie (Rehoboth, NM) and junior Joel Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) as
Yazzie took first place in the one-mile run (4:20.7) while Reasoner took first
in the 3,000 meters (8:56.48).
Other notables for the Calvin men included senior Francis Ikwueme (Jos, Nigeria)
with a fourth place finish in the 55 meter dash (6.65), senior Jon Hutchful
(Accra, Ghana) with a second place finish in the triple jump (44-1 1/2), junior
Kyle Carrick (Shinbori, Japan) with a third place finish in the one-mile run
(4:25.18) and sophomore Nate Meckes (Westland Lutheran HS) with a third place
performance in the shot put (49-10).
Both teams will compete at another indoor invitational hosted by Grand Valley
State next Friday night.
