MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

    MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT (DAY TWO)

HOLLAND (Holland Aquatic Center) - Calvin's women may have let their 181-174
lead slip a bit too far away with their Friday night MIAA Championship
performance as they now trial Hope 381-337.5. Kalamazoo is currently in third
place with 214 points. The final three spots are all within 12 points of each
other with Alma clinging onto fourth place with 155.5 points, Albion in fifth
with 152, and St. Mary's in sixth with 144.
The men currently trail Kalamazoo and Hope with their 285.5 points.
Kalamazoo holds quite a lead with 416 points and Hope has a healthy second place
spread with 351 points. Calvin is trailed by Albion, who has compiled 153.5
points and Alma, who has collected 111.
On the men's side, Peter Boumgarden was the only tanker to win two events. The
sophomore from Naperville, IL, took the 100-yard butterfly title for the second
time in as many attempts. He finished with an NCAA Division III automatic
qualifying time of 49.65 seconds, 1.66 seconds ahead of all other competitors in
the event. The time also earned him the MIAA and pool records, beating the
record he set last year at 49.70.
Boumgarden was teamed with seniors Ryan Johnson and A.J.Penninga, and junior
Brad White in the 800-yard freestyle relay, which also earned an automatic
qualifier in 6:49.95. This time was also an MIAA and pool record, beating the
previous record by over a second.
To go along with the two automatic qualifiers, Penninga and White also
grabbed conditional qualifiers in the 200 free and 100 back, respectively.
Penninga's 1:42.01 earned him third place in the conference, while White's 52.17
    earned him second.
Other top 6 finishers for the Knights include freshman Luke Bagnall in
the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:18.11, earning him fourth place
overall. Johnson, a graduate of Grand Haven HS finished fourth in the 100-yard
butterfly with a time of 51.48. Senior Kevin Katerberg and sophomore Ryan
Preston each placed in the 100-yard breaststroke. Katerberg shaved 1.61 second
off his season best to finish in fourth in 1:00.27 seconds. Preston turned in a
1:01.62 to finish sixth place in the league. Freshman J.D. Schaumberg finished
behind four Kalamazoo divers in the 3-meter event with a score of 361.7. The
Calvin 200-yard medley turned in a 1:35.83 to claim third place.
The women also faired well with a couple winners of their own. Freshman
Abby Johnson from Grand Haven HS claimed the Knight's first win of the evening
in the 400-yard individual medley. Johnson swam an NCAA conditional qualifying
time of 4:37.25, which also earned MIAA and pool record, shattering the 4:40.00
    previous record set in 1994.
Senior Katie Nagelkirk from Holland Christian HS defended last year's
championship in the 200-yard freestyle with an impressive 1:54.90, which also
grabbed her an NCAA conditional qualifier. The time was also an MIAA and pool
record. Nagelkirk now holds all or a piece of three MIAA record times.
Calvin's only other NCAA conditional qualifying time was brought in by
the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:52.81 minutes.
Also finishing in the top six for the Knights were freshman Lynn Visser,
who swam third in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:53.17, and
senior Anne Kuiper in the 100-yard butterfly, whose 1:01.06 earned her second
place. Joining Visser and Kuiper in the top six were freshman Laura Miersma,
who took second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:09.84, senior Deb Knott,
whose 1:10.90 took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and junior Brittney
Stevens, whose 1:11.30 was good for fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Calvin's 200-yard medley relay turned in a 1:53.72, which placed them in
    second place.
Both the men and women will be back in action tomorrow at the Holland
Aquatic Center for the last day of the three-day championship. Prelims begin at
10:00 a.m., while the finals are slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
