CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 5, 2003
MEN'S BASKETBALL
With two of the highest scoring teams in the MIAA going head-to-head,
Wednesday night's matchup between Calvin and Olivet had the makings of being a
high scoring affair. The end result was just that as the Knights outscored
the Comets 111-89 to gain an all-important MIAA victory.
The victory snapped a two-game Calvin losing streak and allowed the Knights to
remain tied for third place in the MIAA standings with Kalamazoo at 5-3 in
conference play. Calvin also remained one game behind 6-2 Albion with the
Knights hosting the Britons on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in front of a homecoming
crowd.
Calvin's scoring output against Olivet Wednesday night marked a season-high
and also the second time the Knights had reached the century mark in scoring
this year.
Calvin led 53-39 at halftime despite having its leading scorer, senior forward
Jeremy Veenstra, saddled with foul trouble. Olivet (10-10 overall, 2-5 MIAA)
led 24-23 midway through the first half, using a barrage of three-point shots
from sophomore forward De'Andre Pruitt. Calvin then ripped off a 30-15 run
over the final nine minutes of the first half to build a 14-point halftime
advantage.
Calvin steadily added to its lead in the second half, shooting 56.4 percent
from the floor in the final 20 minutes of play to cruise to the win.
Calvin finished the game with a 57.4 percent field goal clip along with a 75.8
percent showing (25-of-33) at the free throw line. Olivet shot 45.9 percent
overall and connected on nine three-point shots, six of which came from the
Pruitt who was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Calvin enjoyed a 13-point
advantage at the charity stripe however while six Calvin players reached
double-digits in scoring.
Junior Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) led Calvin with 18 points while junior Mike
Natelborg (Highland, IN) came off the bench to provide 16 points and six
rebounds. Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had 10 points and five assists
while junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Tony Westhouse
(South Christian HS) and junior Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian High School)
all had 10 points apiece. Westhouse had a strong all-around performance as he
grabbed eight rebound and brought the crowd to its feet with a thundering
two-hand slam dunk early in the second half.
Olivet was led in scoring by Pruitt who collected 21 points while senior
Michael Dyson had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Saturday's game against Albion will mark the second year in a row that the
Britons will serve as Calvin's homecoming opponent. A year ago, Albion handed
Calvin its first homecoming defeat since 1988, edging the Knights 65-64 on a
last-second three-point shot from shooting guard Brett Quayle.

OLIVET - Calvin picked up its first MIAA road victory of the year with a 71-60

Trailing 34-30 in the opening minutes of the second half, Calvin used a 12-2

Michigan Christian HS) and sophomore Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS).
Olivet (7-13 overall, 2-7 MIAA) came back to take a 48-47 lead with 8:50
remaining but a three-pointer from McDonald allowed the Knights to take the
lead for good at 54-51 with 5:58 remaining. Another triple from McDonald gave
the Knights a six-point edge at 61-55 moments later. Dyk and senior Emily
Beard (Southfield Christian HS) followed with crucial baskets inside to put
the Knights up 66-59 with under two minutes to play.
Calvin then sealed the win with five free throws in the final 1:13 of
