CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR FEBRUARY 1-2, 2003

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out dual meet campaigns on Saturday with a pair of non-conference victories over host Lake Forest College.

In the men's competition, Calvin topped Lake Forest 126-95 while the Calvin women came up with a 137-105 win. The Calvin men close out their dual meet season with a 7-5 overall record while the Calvin women finish with a 9-4 dual meet mark.

Saturday's competition was held in a 25-meter pool. Consequently, none of the times will count toward NCAA III qualifying marks. A highlight of Saturday's meet however came in the men's 100 meter butterfly as senior Peter Boumgarden of Naperville, Illinois, established a new pool record with a sub 57 second finish.

Both Calvin teams will now break until February 13 when they open up competition at the MIAA Championships at the Holland Aquatic Center. Hosted by Hope College, the MIAA Championships will take place February 13, 14 and 15.

BOUMGARDEN NAMED NCAA III SWIMMER OF THE WEEK BY COLLEGESWIMMING.COM

Calvin sophomore Peter Boumgarden has been named NCAA III Swimmer of the Week by the COLLEGESWIMMING.COM web site. A graduate of Naperville North High School, Boumgarden was so honored for his performances in dual meets on January 25 against Hope and Kalamazoo Colleges. In the double dual, Boumgarden took first place in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 1:57.19 and followed with a win in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 1:56.97.

Boumgarden is the first Calvin swimmer to receive NCAA III Swimmer of the Week honors from the web site.
