CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 1, 2003
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
A determined effort allowed Calvin to break free of a five-game losing skid to conference rival Kalamazoo, as the Knights handed the Hornets a 69-61 defeat in front of nearly 300 fans at the Calvin Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
The victory was Calvin’s first over Kalamazoo since the 1999-2000 season and snapped a five-game losing skid against the Hornets. It also snapped a two-game losing streak this season.
Calvin opened the game with vigor, connecting on its first six shots of the game to take a 12-3 lead. Kalamazoo (11-7 overall, 5-3 MIAA) battled back with an 18-5 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 21-17 lead with 6:33 left in the half. Calvin was able to retake the lead at 31-30 on a pair of free throws by sophomore Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) and then claimed a 33-32 halftime lead on two more free throws from McDonald with four seconds left on the clock.
The two teams then traded leads five times in the opening seven minutes of the second half with Calvin taking the lead for good on a layup by sophomore Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) that put the Knights up 48-46 with 11:58 remaining. The Ouwinga basket sparked a 6-0 Calvin spurt that gave the Knights a 52-46 advantage. Kalamazoo closed to within 52-50 on a pair of free throws from senior Vanessa Larkin but Calvin responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a layup inside by junior Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) after Ouwinga had ripped down a critical offensive rebound. The MacDonald basket gave Calvin a 59-50 lead and control of the game.
Calvin sealed the win by hitting nine of 12 free throw attempts in the final 1:04 of regulation.
Calvin (12-7 overall, 3-5 MIAA) was led in scoring by senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian HS) who pumped in 17 points and blocked three shots while Ouwinga had 16 points and four assists. Senior Emily Beard (Southfield Christian HS) also reached a career milestone as she grabbed her 500th career rebound with 26 seconds left to play, becoming just the sixth player in Calvin women’s basketball history to reach the 500 rebound plateau. Beard finished the game with six points and nine rebounds. Andrea MacDonald also picked up eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots on the afternoon with junior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian HS) chipping in with eight points and four assists.
Kalamazoo was led in scoring by Larkin with 20 points while senior Amanda Weishuhn had 16 points and senior Alissa Johnston 14 points.
Calvin finished the game with a 48.9 percent field goal clip while holding Kalamazoo to 32.1 percent field goal shooting. Kalamazoo shot 24-of-30 (.800) at the free throw line while Calvin was 22-of-36 (.611) at the charity stripe. Both teams finished with 34 rebounds apiece.
The victory lifted Calvin into a tie for fifth place in the MIAA standings with Adrian and within one game of fourth place Albion. Kalamazoo falls into sole possession of third place in the league standings, one game behind second place Alma and three games behind league-leading Hope.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday night when it travels to Olivet for a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Upton Arena.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
KALAMAZOO – With both Calvin and Kalamazoo coming off of tough league losses during the week, one team had to end Saturday with a two-game losing skid in the MIAA. Unfortunately for the Knights it was them, losing at the Anderson Athletic Center 74-59.
The loss, which drops the Knights into a tie for third place with Kalamazoo, was their third straight at the Anderson Athletic Center. The defeat also lowers Calvin to 5-7 in games played away from the Calvin Fieldhouse.
The Knights (11-8 overall, 4-3 MIAA) fell in the hole early 11-5, but battled back using a barrage of three-balls to swing the score in their favor 17-16 at 10:33 mark in the first half. Calvin relied heavily on the long ball in the early going, scoring 12 of its first 20 points from deep. The Knight lead grew as big as six points in the first half, and saw the visitors go into halftime with a 32-29 advantage.
With solid defense and rebounding the Calvin lead ballooned as big as eight points with 15:12 remaining in the game. From that point on the momentum swung the other way and it was all Kalamazoo (14-4 overall, 4-3 MIAA) to end the game. After gaining that eight point lead the Knights gave up three consecutive Hornet three-pointers, and wound up on the wrong end of a 36-13 run to end the game.
Calvin was led by senior forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) who notched his 28th career double-double with a 22 point and 10 rebound effort. Veenstra’s 22 points also moved him into fourth place on the Calvin all-time scoring list with 1,809 points. Veenstra moves in front of current Calvin assistant coach Aaron Winkle, who notched a career 1,802 points. Junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian) scored 12 while fellow classmate Chris Prins (Escondido Calvin Christian) tallied nine points.
Calvin was outrebounded 46-40 and was only able to muster 32.8 percent from the field (22-67) while the Hornets shot 45.6 (16-57) from the floor and 42.1 percent (8-19) from three-point range.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday against Olivet College. The venue is the Calvin Fieldhouse and game time is 7:30 p.m.
