    MEN'S BASKETBALL

For the second consecutive year, Calvin tasted homecoming defeat at the hands
of Albion College as the Knights dropped a 77-69 decision to the visiting
Britons in front of more than 3,000 homecoming fans Saturday afternoon at the
    Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin (12-9 overall, 5-4 MIAA) opened the game by scoring the first six
points but Albion (18-4 overall, 6-2 MIAA) battled back to take a 14-13 lead
with 11:30 left in the half. The Brits then built a 29-23 lead with 4:34 left
before the Knights rallied to tie the game at 29-29 with six unanswered points
with senior Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian HS) capping the run with a
layup with 1:21 left in the half. Calvin then had a chance to take a halftime
lead but missed a shot in close and the Britons followed with a go-ahead layup
by sophomore point guard Marcus Gill. A Calvin turnover in the closing
seconds was converted into a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Albion senior
Brett Quayle that put the Britons up 34-29 at the break.

After falling behind 36-29, Calvin ripped of a 7-0 run capped off by a
three-point play from senior Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian HS) with 17:35
remaining to tie the score at 36.

two-minute span to build a 53-43 lead with 12:35 left. Albion would later
lead by 11 at 59-48 with 9:53 to go before the Knights began to gradually chip
    into the Briton lead.

Calvin closed to within three at 64-61 on a three-point play inside by junior
Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with 2:13 left on the clock and then
trailed 66-63 after a layup inside from Veenstra with 1:49 to go.

Gill then stepped up and connected on a clutch three-point shot with 1:27
remaining to lift Albion into a 69-63 lead. Albion then connected on eight
free throws in the final 54 seconds to close out its third straight victory
over the Knights at Calvin Fieldhouse and its second straight in Calvin's
    Homecoming game.

assists and two steals. Broene added 16 points off the bench while junior
Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) had 12. Albion was led by Quayle who picked up 23
points and five rebounds while senior Chris Hawkins provided 15 points.
