CALVIN SPORT REPORT FOR JANUARY 25, 2003 (PART TWO)
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a pair of MIAA dual
meets in a triangular hosted by Hope College Saturday afternoon.
In the men's competition Calvin defeated Hope 117-105 and lost to defending MIAA
champion Kalamazoo 141-99. Calvin's win over Hope was its first in MIAA dual
meet competition since the 1984-1985 MIAA season.
On the women's side, Calvin dropped a 149-93 decision to Hope but defeated
Kalamazoo 165-77.
The Calvin men are now 7-6 overall in dual meet competition this year while the
Calvin women are 9-5.
Sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) highlighted the afternoon for the
Calvin men as he took home victories in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly.
Boumgarden was also a part of Calvin's 400 medley relay team that clocked in
with a time of 3:31.15. Individually, Boumgarden took first place in the 200 IM
with a season-best time of 1:57.19. He also posted a season-best time of
1:56.97 in winning the 200 butterfly.
Senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was the other individual winner
for the Calvin men as he took first in the 100 freestyle (47.62). Penninga
added a third place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:44.07). Other notable
efforts included a second place swim by sophomore Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN) in
the 200 breaststroke (2:14.71) and a second place swim by freshman Luke Bagnall
(Marshalltown, IA) in the 200 backstroke (2:01.82). In addition, Calvin's 400
freestyle relay team of senior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS), junior Brad White
(Traverse City), Bagnall and Penninga took second wiht a time of 3:12.21.
In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in four events as freshman
Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) took the 200 freestyle (1:58.10), senior Katie
Nagelk took the 50 freestyle (24.33) and 100 freestyle (53.55) while freshman
Julie Erickson (Libertyville, IL) won the the three-meter diving competition
(202.30). Erickson also took second on the one-meter board (195.80) while
Johnson took second in the 200 butterfly (2:14.93). Senior Anne Kuiper
(Houghton) added a second place finish in the 200 IM (2:17.90).
Another exciting race came in the 400 medley relay as the Calvin quartet of
Johnson, senior Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL), Kuiper and Nagelkirk took second with
a tmie of 4:08.66, just three-tenths of a second behind Hope's first place time
of 4:08.36.
Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday in non-conference meets at Lake
Forest (IL). Next Saturday's competition will be the final dual meets of the
year for Calvin. The MIAA Championships are scheduled for February 13-15 at the
Holland Aquatic Center with Hope College serving as host.
