    MEN'S BASKETBALL

ALMA - With no letdown in sight after a tough league victory over Hope last
Saturday, Calvin came out and handed Alma an 87-57 defeat Saturday afternoon at
    the Cappaert Gymnasium.

With a Hope victory over Olivet, and an Albion loss to Kalamazoo, Calvin moved
into a first place tie with Hope atop the MIAA with a 4-1 mark.

After jumping out to a 44-28 halftime advantage, the Knights added to their
margin by outscoring the host Scots 43-29 in the second half. Calvin
outrebounded Alma 48-38 and also held an advantage in the turnover category,
    12-18.

The Knights were led by freshman Joel Hoekstra (Unity Christian) who notched a
season-high 19 points, in only twelve minutes played. Junior Chris Prins
(Escondido Calvin Christian) scored 16 points while senior Jeremy Veentra
(Kalamazoo Christian) amassed 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Junior reserve
Mike Natelborg (Illiana Christian) scored a season-high 12 points on 4 of 7
shooting from behind the arc. Grabbing 11 rebounds was senior forward Rob

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

A seven-minute scoring drought proved to be too much for Calvin to overcome as
the Knights suffered a 63-55 defeat to visiting Alma Saturday afternoon. The
loss was Calvin's second straight at the Fieldhouse and marked its third
defeat in its last four games.

Calvin is now tied for fifth place with Adrian at 2-4 in the conference
standings. The Knights will travel to Adrian on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m.
contest. The game will mark the completion of the first round of the MIAA round
    robin schedule for both teams.

In its loss to Alma (10-5 overall, 4-2 MIAA) Saturday, Calvin (11-6 overall)
held a 15-11 lead after a free throw by senior Emily Beard (Southfield Christian
HS) with 8:29 left in the half. The Knights would go scoreless over the next
seven minutes however while Alma ripped off 16 unanswered points to take a 27-15
lead. A three-pointer from sophomore guard Brittney DeRoos (Sheboygan, WI)
finally broke the drought and sparked a 7-2 Calvin surge that left the Knights
    trailing 29-22 at the break.

The Knights then suffered through a disastrous opening three minutes of the
second half as they turned the ball over five times and allowed the Scots to rip
off a 13-0 run that put Alma on top 42-22 with 17:42 left to play.

Calvin gradually chipped back into the Alma lead but still trailed by 17 with
under 10 minutes to play. The Knights then ripped off a 14-1 run capped off by
a three-pointer from sophomore guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) that
brought Calvin to within five at 50-45 with 5:32 left on the clock. A layup
from sophomore Mindy VanDamme and a subsequent three-point play from senior
Shelly Ulfig allowed the Scots to quell the Calvin momentum as the Knights could
get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Calvin was led in defeat by junior center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) who
picked up 19 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Beard added nine
points and seven rebounds. Alma was led by Ulfig and junior Karen Hall as both
players notched double-doubles. Hall chalked up 20 points and 15 rebounds while
Ulfig had 18 points and 15 boards. Senior Janell Twietmeyer added 14 points.

As a team, Calvin shot just 33.9 percent from the floor including just 23.1
percent (3-of-13) from three-point range. The Knights were also outrebounded
    42-31.
