CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 2003
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a pair of
hard-fought non-conference dual meets to visiting Wayne State University Friday
night at the Bergsma Natatorium as the men dropped a 128-108 decision while the
women were victorious 134-109.
The Calvin women are now 8-4 in dual meets this year while the men drop to 6-5
overall.
The women put on an impressive show, taking first place in seven of eleven
possible events. The Knights were led by freshman Abby Johnson (Grand Haven),
who took first place in two events, the 100 backstroke (1:02.49) and 1000
freestyle (11:01.89). Each of Johnson's times were new season best marks for
the lady Knights. Senior Anne Kuiper (Hougton) also had a stellar showing,
grabbing two individual first place finishes, winning the 200 freestyle
(2:01.00) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.30). Fellow senior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland
Christian) grabbed a Knight season best time in the 500 freestyle with a 5:21.43
showing.
Collectively the Knights also garnered two first place finishes in relays,
winning the 200 medley and the 800 freestyle. The 200 medley team of Nagelkirk,
junior Brittany Stevens (Mankato, MN/Mankato West), freshmen Lynn Visser
(Jenison) and Jen Kool (Holland Christian) reeled of a finish of 1:57.86 while
the 800 freestyle relay, consisting of Johnson, Nagelkirk, Stevens, and Visser,
swam away with an 8:07.33 mark.
On the men's side Calvin collected six first place finishes. However, the
finish that really caught everyone's eye was the second place showing of
senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian). Penninga reeled of a school
record 9:51.83 finish that toppled the former Calvin record held by Brad
Flikkema in 1998 (9:51.94). Sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville,
IL/Naperville North) nabbed two individual first place finishes, the 200
freestyle (1:47.23) and the 100 butterfly (53.09). Junior Brad White (Dayton
Christian) took first in the 100 freestyle (48.49), while freshman Luke Bagnall
(Marshalltown, IA/Marshalltown) grabbed first in the 50 freestyle (23.33).
The men also earned first place finishes in the 200 medley relay and the 800
freestyle relay. The 200 medley team of Bagnall, White, sophomores Dan
VanderHeide (Grand Rapids Christian) and Peter Daining (Grand Rapids Christian)
finished in 1:43.57 while the 800 freestyle team, consisting of Penninga, White,
Boumgarden, and senior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven) notched a 7:13.31 mark.
Both teams will return to the pool on Saturday, January 25 for a triangular
meet with Kalamazoo and Hope. The meet is slated for a 1:00 PM start in Holland.
