CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 22, 2003

    WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin picked up a much-needed victory and snapped a two-game losing streak in
the process with a 64-50 win over visiting St. Mary's Wednesday night at the
    Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin (11-5 overall, 2-3 MIAA) used a 52.3 percent shooting performance and a
stingy defensive effort to propel itself to the win. St. Mary's shot just 30
percent in the first half including 39.3 percent overall.

Calvin scored the first seven points of the game and the final five points of
the first half, en route to taking a 34-20 lead at halftime. Calvin would
stretch its lead to as many as 22 points in the second half before a late 13-5
St. Mary's surge brought the final margin to 14 points.

Calvin was led in scoring by senior forward Emily Beard (Southfield Christian
HS) with 12 points while sophomore guard Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) had
10 points as 12 Knights got into the scoring column. Senior Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian HS) contributed six points, four assists and three steals.
Sophomores Lesa Holleman (Chandler, MN) and Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) had eight points apiece off the bench as Calvin received 28 points
from its reserves. Freshman point guard Katherine Pettinga (South Christian HS)
also had a fine floor game off the bench with three points, five rebounds, three
    steals and three assists.

Calvin outrebounded St. Mary's (5-11, 1-4 MIAA) 30-27 with junior Andrea
MacDonald (Allendale HS) leading the Knights in the rebounding column with six
boards along with three blocked shots. Emily Creachbaum led St. Mary's with
12 points and eight rebounds while Audrey Gajor added 10 points off the bench.
