CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP FOR JANUARY 18, 2003

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING

HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams got back
on track with a pair of non-conference dual meet victories over GLIAC opponents
    Saturday afternoon.

In the women’s competition, Calvin topped Ashland 84-56 and host Hillsdale
83-48. The Knights are now 7-4 in dual meet competition this year. On the
men’s side, Calvin edged Ashland 67-65 and then defeated Hillsdale 114-14.
The Calvin men are now 6-4 in dual meet competition during the 2002-2003
    season.

Freshman Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School highlighted the afternoon for
the Knights as she shattered a pair of Calvin records – one of which was the
second oldest still remaining in the Calvin women’s swimming and diving record
    books.

Johnson established her first record in the 100 butterfly as she took first
place in the event with an NCAA III B’ Cut qualifying time of 59.57. The
performance shattered the previous record of 59.66 set by former Calvin
All-American Jackie Belyea in 1991. Belyea’s mark had been the second-oldest
in the Calvin women’s swimming and diving record books.

Johnson then shattered Calvin’s 400 IM record with a first place and NCAA III
B’ Cut qualifying time of 4:39.57. Her time lopped more than six seconds off
the previous school record established by Mara McGuin in 2001 at the MIAA
Championships. Johnson was a triple-winner for the Knights on Saturday as she
also cruised to a first place swim in the 200 butterfly with a season-best time
of 2:12.34 that was a half-second off a school record.

Collectively, the Calvin women posted eight first place performances in
Saturday’s tri-meet. Other first place performances for the Knights included
senior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian HS) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.41),
freshman Jane Visser (Jenison HS) in the 1,650 freestyle (18:45.50), senior Anne
Kuiper (Houghton) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.12), junior Deb Nordin (Lynn,
MA) in the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions.

On the men’s side, Calvin came up with seven first place performances with
sophomore John Engbers (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first place on both
the one and three-meter diving boards. Other winners for Calvin included
sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the 200 butterfly (1:58.18),
senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200 freestyle (1:45.63),
junior Brad White (Traverse City) in the 50 freestyle (22.37), sophomore Ryan
Preston (Richmond, IN) in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.92) and Calvin’s quartet
of freshman Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA), Preston, senior Ryan Johnson (Grand
Haven HS) and White in the 200 medley relay.

Both Calvin teams return to action on Friday when they host Wayne State
University in a non-conference meet at 6:00 p.m. at the Bergsma Natatorium. On
Saturday, the Knights will travel to Hope for an MIAA tri-meet that will also
include Kalamazoo. Saturday’s competition will begin at 1:00 p.m.
