CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 4, 2003
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
EAGLE ROCK, CA - Calvin closed out its three-game Southern California
swing with a flourish, downing Occidental College 77-35 Saturday
afternoon in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The victory was the fifth
straight for Calvin including its third straight win in California.
At 9-2 overall, the Knights are off to their best start since the
1996-97 season. They will now prepare for their MIAA opener Wednesday
night at a Kalamazoo College team it has not defeated since the
1999-2000 season.
In its victory over Occidental Saturday, Calvin used a 21-2 scoring run
late in the first half to open up a 37-18 lead and eventually a 40-26
halftime advantage.
Occidental scored the first point of the second half to close to within
13 points but the Knights then exploded in another run, outscoring the
host Tigers 19-0 over a nine-minute span to take a commanding 59-27
lead.
Calvin would never look back as all 14 of its players got in the
scoring column.
Calvin was led in scoring by sophomore guard Kristen McDonald (West
Catholic HS) who tossed in 14 points off the bench which included a
3-of-4 showing from beyond the three-point arc. Junior guard Kim
Wolthuis (South Christian HS) was next with 11 points while senior guard
Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian HS) had nine points, four
rebounds and three steals. Junior center Andrea MacDonald (Allendale
HS) also had a strong game with 7 rebounds, six blocked shots and five
points.
Occidental (3-5) was led by senior center Alexandra Lamprell who tossed
in a game-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Calvin shot 50.9 percent overall including 55.6 percent in the first
half. The Knights also held a commanding edge on the boards,
outrebounding the Tigers 50-25 with senior forward Emily Beard
(Southfield Christian HS) leading the Knights with nine caroms.
"This was a nice way to end our trip to California," said Calvin
women's basketball coach Kim Gall. "Everyone got a chance to play and
our enthusiasm was high. Despite this win, we still need to turn up our
performance another few notches now that the MIAA season is upon us. I
expect every one of our league games to be a battle."
Calvin's MIAA opener at Kalamazoo's Anderson Athletic Center Wednesday
night is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
A tough Aquinas basketball team handed Calvin its fifth loss of the
young season 74-48 on Saturday afternoon at the Aquinas College
Fieldhouse. The defeat was the worst against Calvin (7-5) since November
of 1988, when it dropped a 90-64 decision to Western Michigan
University. This was Calvin's first loss to the Saints since the
1996-97 season when they dropped a 74-69 decision at the Aquinas
Fieldhouse. The Knights own a 56-19 advantage over Aquinas in the
all-time series as well as a 7-2 edge under head coach Kevin Vande
Streek.
The first half was not kind to the Knights as they were only able to
muster 16 points, pitted against the 30 amassed by Aquinas (10-6).
Calvin shot 17 percent from the floor and connected on only 1 of 12
attempts from beyond the arc.
Calvin was led in defeat by senior forward Rob Dykstra (Tri-Unity
Christian) as he tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior Jeremy
Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) was next with seven points and a
game-high nine rebounds. Chuck Schuba led the Saints with 23 points on 9
of 13 shooting from the floor.
The Knights ended the game with a season-low shooting percentage of
26.6 percent (17-64) which included a 2 of 26 performance from three
point range. The Saints outrebounded the Knights 43-40 while Calvin also
committed a season-high 26 turnovers.
Calvin will return to action on January 8 to open its conference
portion of the season against Kalamazoo College. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
