CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 8, 2003
MEN’S BASKETBALL
In need of a victory and a boost of confidence, Calvin ended up successful on
both counts Wednesday night as the Knights captured a 81-70 victory over
nationally-ranked Kalamazoo in the MIAA opener for both teams. The Calvin win
snapped a five-game Kalamazoo win streak as the Hornets entered Wednesday’s
game at the Calvin Fieldhouse ranked 18th in the latest D3hoops.com poll.
The Calvin victory also marked the seventh straight win for the Knights in an
MIAA opener which have all come under the helm of head coach Kevin Vande
Streek.
Calvin entered Wednesday’s MIAA tilt looking to rebound from a disappointing
74-48 non-conference defeat at Aquinas last Saturday afternoon. The Knights
bounced back in winning fashion, using a passionate effort on defense and on the
offensive and defensive glass against the visiting Hornets.
Calvin finished the contest with a 40-26 rebounding edge and held Kalamazoo to
39.3 percent field goal shooting. Meanwhile, Calvin shot an even 50 percent
(28-of-56) from the floor including 51.7 percent in the first half.
Kalamazoo matched Calvin’s intensity for the bulk of the first half as the
Knights could never extend their lead to more than eight points. After the
Hornets had crept to within four on a layup by senior guard Dirk Rhinehart with
37 seconds left in the half, Calvin answered with a buzzer-beating putback by
junior forward Rob Holleman (Chandler, MN) that gave the Knights a 42-36 lead at
intermission.
Calvin quickly extended its lead to 45-36 in the opening moments of the second
half but the Hornets came back to close to within two points on two occasions,
the latter coming with 13:18 remaining after Kalamazoo junior Mike King nailed a
jumper that left his team trailing 51-49.
Calvin then took momentum however with a 13-4 scoring run that was capped off
by a free throw by senior Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian HS) that gave the
Knights a 64-53 lead with 7:22 remaining. Kalamazoo closed to within eight at
64-56 on a triple by Dirk Rhinehart seconds later but would get no closer the
rest of the way as the Knights pulled away for the win.
Junior forward Chris Prins (Escondido, CA) led Calvin with 17 points on 7-of-13
shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Veenstra also had a big night with 14
points and 12 rebounds to notch his 25th career double-double. Junior point
guard Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) was next with 13 points that included a
6-for-6 performance at the free throw line. Freshman forward Joel Hoekstra
(Unity Christian HS) contributed eight points off the bench while Holleman and
junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) added seven points apiece.
Senior Rob Dykstra (Tri-unity Christian HS) was also strong with five points,
eight rebounds and two steals.
Kalamazoo was led by sophomore forward Erik Rhinehart with 18 points with Dirk
Rhinehart and senior Nathan Burns scoring 13 points apiece and senior forward
Scott Montmorency chipping in with 11 points.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Olivet for a game
scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
