WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
CLAREMONT, CA -- A 20-0 run midway through the first half propelled
Calvin to a 66-45 victory over host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College
Thursday evening as the Knights improved to 2-0 on its trip through
Southern California and to 8-2 overall.
Calvin is now off to its best start since the 1996-97 season.
Thursday's victory marked the third straight win for the Knights.
With the score deadlocked at eight with just over 13 minutes remaining,
Calvin broke loose for 20 unanswered points to take a commanding 29-8
lead. The host Athenas called timeout on two separate occasions during
the run but could not halt the Calvin momentum. Calvin junior center
Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) was a force inside in the surge, scoring
six points and grabbing four rebounds while sophomore Lesa Holleman
(Chandler, MN) came off the bench to score five points in the same
surge.
Calvin took a 37-22 lead into halftime and never allowed Claremont-Mudd
Scripps to get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
MacDonald led Calvin with 13 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots
to notch her fourth double-double of the season. Holleman added a
career-high 11 points along with three rebounds and three assists.
Sophomore Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) was next for Calvin with
nine points and three rebounds. Calvin placed 12 players in the scoring
column and finished the game with a 49.2 percent field goal clip
including 54.8 percent in the first half.
"This was a nice win for our team," said Calvin women's basketball
coach Kim Gall. "That run in the first half was fun to watch but the
key to it all was the intensity of our defense. We forced some
turnovers and came up with some blocked shots and that got our
transition game going. It was fun to see everyone get some playing time
and contribute to this win."
Mudd-Scripps (4-5) was led in defeat by Tana Ross who had 15 points
while Ashleigh Noda had eight points. The Athenas shot just 29.6
percent overall and committed 19 turnovers. Calvin also outrebounded
Mudd-Scripps 43-30.
Calvin closes out its Southern California swing on Saturday when it
travels to Occidental College for a game slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
(EST).
