CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY DECEMBER 21, 2002
MEN'S BASKETBALL
NEW CONCORD, OH - Following a double-digit loss on Friday night, a focused
Calvin team came to play on Saturday afternoon. Playing in its second
consolation final in the last three tournaments Calvin handed Malone (OH) a
lopsided loss 103-66 to earn a third place finish in the Muskingum Christmas
Tournament.
After building a 48-34 halftime advantage the Knights came out on fire, rattling
off an impressive 17-5 run in the first five minutes of the second half. The
Knights outscored Malone 55-32 in the second half using red-hot shooting and a
suffocating defense. The Calvin bench outscored Malone 62-18 over the course of
the game. The victory also set season-highs for the Knights in scoring (103) and
margin of victory (37).
The red-hot shooting of the Knights was well spread as thirteen players recorded
points, and four Calvin players checked in with double-digit points. Calvin
connected on 40-78 shots from the floor, and also benefited from a good
afternoon at the charity stripe, shooting 87.5 percent (14-16). The Knights also
won 'the battle on the boards' outrebounding Malone 42-24 to improve to 3-0
lifetime against the Pioneers.
According to Calvin basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek it was a good win. "The
challenge was to come out and be mentally tough, and I was very impressed with
our efforts tonight."
The balanced Calvin attack was led by junior guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids
Christian) as he poured in 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Senior Jeremy
Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian) checked in with 16 points and seven rebounds,
while fellow classmate Rob Dykstra (Tri-Unity Christian) added 12 points and
seven rebounds. Senior Tony Westhouse (South Christian) also turned in a stellar
performance amassing a career-high 10 points and five rebounds. Freshman Jeremy
Burgin (Lindstrom, MN/Chisago Lakes) played a solid game collecting eight points
and a career-high six assists.
The Knights will return to the Calvin Fieldhouse for a December 31 matchup
against non-conference rival Defiance (OH), slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
