CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2002

MEN'S BASKETBALL

After posting an 89-76 victory over visiting Defiance College on New Year's
Eve Calvin hopes to pick up where it left off when resuming play on January 4.
Calvin will begin a tough week with a non-conference game against Aquinas on
Saturday and then return home to open its MIAA season with Kalamazoo on
Wednesday, January 8.

After Defiance built a six point lead 44-38 with 1:36 left in the first half,
Calvin went to work. The Knights finished the half on an 8-2 run and went into
the locker room tied at 46.

What looked to be a see-saw game, turned into a Calvin run away in the
second-half. After the fourteenth tie of the game at 57-57, Calvin turned up
the defensive pressure and never looked back. Calvin built their lead as big as
16 points on a pair of free-throws from junior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids
Christian) and finally settled on a final margin of 13 at 89-76.

A very balanced scoring attack was led by Broene who scored a game-high 22
points. Senior forward Rob Dykstra (Tri-Unity Christian) was next tallying 15
points and 12 rebounds while fellow classmate Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo
Christian) had 13 points and seven rebounds. Juniors Chris Prins (Escondido
Calvin Christian) and Josh Berghuis (Unity Christian) scored 13 and 11,
respectively.

The Knights dominated the boards, outrebounding Defiance 43-31. Calvin also
held the advantage from the line scoring on 23 of 28 attempts, while Defiance
was held to just 6-8 from the charity stripe. Calvin will return to the hard
court on Saturday against cross-town rival Aquinas on Saturday January 4 at 3
p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

LAVERNE, CA -- Calvin overcame a severe case of jet-lag and a 10-point
second-half deficit to gain a 60-54 victory at the University of LaVerne Tuesday
afternoon in the first of a three-game swing in Southern California.

Looking fatigued and out-of-sync, Calvin trailed 33-27 at halftime and then saw
the host Leopards outscore the Knights 9-5 in the opening six minutes of the
second half, giving LaVerne a 42-32 advantage. The Knights (7-2) then stepped
up to score nine unanswered points to trim the LaVerne lead to three at 42-39
with just under 10 minutes remaining. Sophomore Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian)
ignited the run with a three-pointer and senior Emily Beard (Southfield
Christian) followed with back-to-back field goals inside.

A free throw by Beard with 5:51 remaining then gave Calvin its first lead since
the opening minute of the game as the Knights went up 46-45. Moments later,
junior Andrea MacDonald (Allendale HS) gave Calvin another lead at 48-47 on a
power-move inside and the Knights would never trail again. A 15-foot jumper by
Beard with 3:55 left capped off a 20-5 Calvin run and gave the Knights a 52-47
edge.

After LaVerne (2-6) had cut the lead to 54-52, Calvin junior Kim Wolthuis
(South Christian HS) delivered a clutch three-pointer from the right wing with
1:41 left on the clock. A steal by Ouwinga and another baseline jumper from
Wolthuis in the final minute of play sealed the come-from-behind win for the
Knights.

"Whenever you travel a few time zones away, it's always difficult to get your
legs underneath you," said Calvin women's basketball coach Kim Gall. "We lacked
energy in the first half and LaVerne had us on its home court. To our credit,
we rallied and our upperclassmen were a big part of that. Emily Beard, Tricia
Dyk and Kim Wolthuis all stepped up their level of play and gave us a huge
lift."

Wolthuis led Calvin with 18 points as she was a sizzling 8-of-9 from the floor.
Beard collected 12 points and six rebounds while Dyk and MacDonald had seven
points apiece. MacDonald also picked up a team-high eight rebounds.

LaVerne was led by burly junior Sydni Myrick who scored 18 points off the bench
including 15 in the first half. Sally Marroquin also had 13 points for LaVerne
which outrebounded Calvin 49-34.

Calvin shot 45.6 percent overall while holding LaVerne to 33.9 percent shooting
including just 25.8 percent shooting in the second half.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday night when it travels to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a game scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m. (EST)
