    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR December 20, 2002

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

    NEW CONCORD, OH - A late first-half surge allowed Taylor to take control of a
    first round game against Calvin the Muskingum Christmas Tournament Friday night
    as the Trojans continued on for an impressive 85-64 victory over the Knights.

    Ranked 11th in the NAIA Division II poll, Taylor (11-3) will face host
    Muskingum (5-2) in the championship game Saturday at 5:00 p.m. while Calvin
    (5-4) will face Malone (OH) in the consolation game at 3:00 p.m.

    Leading 33-29, Taylor used a 7-1 run in the final 1:35 of the second half to
    build a 40-31 halftime lead. The Trojans then ripped off a 9-2 run in the
    opening three minutes of the second half, holding Calvin without a second half
    field goal until the 16:51 mark, to take firm control of the game.

    Taylor led by as many as 25 points in the second half with Calvin getting no
    closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

    Calvin was led in defeat by senior forward Jeremy Veenstra (Kalamazoo Christian
    HS) and junior guard Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who tallied 15
    points apiece. Junior center Ryan Smalligan (East Grand Rapids HS) blocked four
    first half shots for the Knights while freshman guard Jeremy Burgin (Chisago
    Lakes, MN) had six points off the bench along with a career-high five assists.

    Taylor was led by its inside tandem of seniors Matt Boling and Adam Musters as
    both players had 21 points and seven reboundsa apiece. Matt Traylor added 16
    for Taylor while R.J. Buecler had 15 points including an 8-for-8 performance at
    the free throw line off the bench.

    Taylor connected on 19-of-23 (.826) attempts at the free throw line and shot
    57.1 percent from the field. The Trojans also held a 33-23 rebounding
    advantage. Calvin was 12-of-16 (.750) at the line and shot 39.3 percent
    overall.

    Friday's game marked the first matchup between Calvin and Taylor since 1986.
    Calvin still leads the all-time series 11-4.
