    MEN'S SOCCER

Joel Veldhouse Receives Great Lakes All-Region Soccer Honors

GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin College sophomore forward Joel Veldhouse has been named
to the NCAA III Great Lakes All-Region second team in men's soccer by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Veldhouse is a graduate of Sioux Falls
    Christian High School.

This past fall, Veldhouse led the MIAA in scoring with 24 points in conference
play on the strength of 10 goals and four assists, becoming the first Calvin
player since Barone in 1991 to lead the MIAA in total points. Veldhouse
transferred to Calvin this fall after spending the previous two years at
    Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

The impact by Veldhouse was immediate as he finished the season with 17 goals
and eight assists to lead the Knights in scoring. Three of his goals were
game-winners. He was also selected MIAA Offensive Player of the Week twice
during the year and was then named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. In
addition, Veldhouse was named to the All-MIAA first team.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Hughes, Calvin finished its
2002 campaign with an 11-8-1 record that allowed the Knights to reach the
double-digit plateau in victories for the fifth straight year and for the 26th
time in school history. The Knights also recorded a 6-5-1 mark in the MIAA which
was good for a fourth place conference finish.

Since the National Soccer Coaches Association began selecting all-region teams
at the NCAA III level, Calvin has had its players receive all-region accolades
    26 times.

    MEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin-Hope rivalry featured in ESPN The Magazine

In February of 1992, the storied Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry appeared
in the pages of the nationally-acclaimed Sports Illustrated magazine.

More than 10 years later, the rivalry has been mentioned in another national
magazine as the December 9 issue of ESPN The Magazine mentions the Calvin-Hope
men's basketball rivalry as one of the most notable rivalries in collegiate
athletics. Another NCAA III rivalry mentioned in the section (page 37) entitled
"Clash of the (Minor) Titans" is the Wabash-DePauw football rivalry.

The Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry spans more than 80 years and sees
Calvin holding a 77-72 series lead. The 150th meeting between the two rivals
will take place at the Calvin Fieldhouse on January 18.

A special website featuring the rivalry is located on the Calvin web site at:
    http://www.calvin.edu/thegame/

The January 18 meeting will also serve as the satellite game as West Michigan's
Public Broadcasting station WGVU-TV 35/52 will televise the game live with the
telecast also being made available to over 50 satellite locations across the
    country.

A year ago, over 2,400 alumni of either Calvin or Hope joined at satellite
locations across the country to watch the January 19 meeting between the two
    teams.

In the 149 prior meetings, Calvin has outscored Hope by just 26 points
(9,865-9,839) which works out to a difference of just 0.17 points per game.
