CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY OCTOBER 29, 2002
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin improved to 24-6 overall and 11-2 in the MIAA with a three-game victory
over league foe St. Mary's College 30-23, 30-27, 30-21. The victory also marks
the fifth time in the last seven years that the Knights have reached the 24-win
plateau. In the last seven years Calvin has compiled a 171-63 (71%) overall mark
and a 75-14 (84%) advantage in league games.
Leading the way for the Knights were the middle-hitter duo of senior Melissa
Pell (Fremont) and sophomore Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian), as each garnered
eight kills apiece. Kuipers added four service aces and Pell notched five
blocks. Senior setter Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) dished out 29 assists
while sophomore Kristen DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) had 10
digs.
With only one league game remaining Calvin has cemented itself in second place
and will be the second seed in the upcoming MIAA tournament. The tournament
which runs from November 5-9 will consist of the top four seeds hosting first
round games, with the highest remaining seed after the first round hosting the
semi-finals and finals. The Knights will round out their regular season with a
conference match with Hope on Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m.
