CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 28, 2002
WOMEN”S SOCCER
Adrian – The Calvin Knights started their reading recess break with a journey to Adrian, Michigan to face Siena Heights in a non-league match today. Siena Heights came into the match ranked 13th in the most recent NAIA poll. The Saints also boasted an overall record of 16-1. The Knights entered the game on a two-game win streak against league opponents. The Knights were unable to out-muscle their opponent and lost the match 3-0 to fall to 10-6-2 overall.
The first half was dominated by Sienna Heights, but they were unable to put away a goal as Calvin goalkeeper, senior Leah Vander Ploeg (Unity Christian), made five saves, some of which came on three corner kicks. The Knights were completely blanked in the first half as they were unable to fire any shots in the first 45 minutes.
The Knights were able to muster some offense in the second half in taking three shots; all of which came from leading scorer Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian), but it was not enough. The Saints fired eleven shots in the second half, six of which were blocked by Vander Ploeg, but three of the others found the back of the net.
Siena Heights opened the scoring in the second half as freshman Tina Myers sent a shot that deflected off the crossbar and VanderPloeg and into the net. Valerie Gutierrez and Stacey Jacobs then added goals for the host Saints to put the game out of reach.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts St. Mary’s at 3:00 p.m. at Calvin Field in an MIAA encounter. The Knights will then close out their season on Saturday when they journey to Kalamazoo for an MIAA match slated to start at noon.
