CALVIN SPORTS REPORT WEEKEND WRAP-UP FOR 10-26-02
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's swimming and diving team opened its season by capturing the
title of the Grand Valley State Relays for the fourth time in the last five
years this past Saturday as the Knights posted a first place score of 148
points, finishing eight points ahead of host Grand Valley. Heading into the
final event of the afternoon - the 400 freestyle relay - Calvin held a 134-130
lead over Grand Valley. Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Peter
Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), junior Brad White (Traverse City), senior Ryan
Johnson (Grand Haven) and senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian) then
clinched first place for the Knights as they churned out a first place time of
3:15.82, more than a second ahead of Grand Valley's second place team. The
first place swim added 14 points to Calvin's final total while Grand Valley
picked up 10 points with its second place swim in the 400 freestyle relay.
In the women's competition, Calvin narrowly missed out on a first place
performance as the Knights took second with 138 points, four points behind Grand
Valley. Albion took third in both the men's and women's competition as it
men recorded 80 points and its women 88 points.
On the men's side, Calvin took first place in seven of a possible 12 events
while the Knights took first place in five of a possible 12 events on the
women's side. The Calvin men just missed a first place finish in the 300
backstroke relay as its relay of senior Jake VanderPlas (Palo Alto, CA),
sophomore Dan VanderHeide (Grand Rapids Christian) and White took second place
with a time of 2:50.42, just one-hundreth of a second behind Grand Valley's
first place relay team.
The Calvin men flashed their strength in the freestyle events as the Knights
took first place in the 800 freestyle, 500 progressive freestyle, 1,500
freestyle and 400 freestyle relays. The Knights also grabbed first place in the
