CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCT. 30, 2002

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin picked up its fifth shutout victory of the year with a 1-0 win over
visiting St. Mary's Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field, improving to 11-6-2
overall and 8-3-2 in the MIAA.

Calvin dominated the first half by outshooting St. Mary's 7-1 and scored the
game's only goal in the 14th minute of play. Calvin junior Becky Welsh
(Delaware, OH) picked up her fourth goal on the play that was set up by two
well-timed passes from seniors Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) and
Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian). Dyk ignited the play with a rush up the
middle and when pressed by the defense, slid a pass to Kooima on the right wing.
Instead of firing a shot, Kooima then slid a pass through the St. Mary's
back-line with Welsh one-timing the Kooima pass top shelf to give the Knights a
1-0 lead.

Dyk nearly scored on two separate occasions later in the first half but her
first shot off a rush through the St. Mary's defense slid just wide while her
second chance was stopped by a strong save from St. Mary's goaltender Maureen
MacDonald.

In the second half, St. Mary's began to press the attack and came up with a
handful of quality scoring chances. The best opportunity for the Belles came
with under seven minutes left to play when sophomore striker Jen Concannon broke
free for a clean shot from the Calvin 15-yard line. Concannon's shot flew just
over the crossbar however, keeping the Knights in front. Earlier in the second
half, St. Mary's hit the far goalpost with a hard shot on the ground.

Calvin finished the game with a 15-5 shots at goal advantage while senior
goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian HS) came up with two saves in goal
for the Knights in collecting her 19th career shutout victory including her 35th
career victory in goal. MacDonald came up with five saves in defeat for the
Belles (7-9-2 overall, 5-6-2 MIAA).

Calvin will close out its season on Saturday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a
game scheduled to begin at noon.
