CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, OCT. 19, 2002

    MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

LACROSSE, WI – The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s cross country team gave host Wisconsin-LaCrosse a scare at the Tori Neubauer Invitational Saturday afternoon as the fifth-ranked Knights finished seven points behind fourth-ranked LaCrosse which captured first place with 86 points. Calvin’s second place total of 93 points was 18 points better than sixth-ranked Wartburg College while the University of Minnesota took fourth with 145 points with 17th-ranked Carleton taking fifth with 200 points.

Calvin received a pair of sensational performances from juniors Sarah Hastings (Traverse City West HS) and Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS) as Hastings took second individually with a time of 18:26 and Lair took fourth in 18:27. Freshman Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) rounded out Calvin’s top-five, placing 47th in 19:43.

“We are quite pleased with today’s outcome, particularly since this race was held on the home course of LaCrosse,” said Calvin women’s cross country coach Nancy Meyer. “We had exceptional performances from Sarah and Jessie but I was pleased with our team as a whole. We had a great outlook heading into the race and we remained mentally tough throughout the race.”

In the men’s competition – the 8K Jim Drews Invitational – sixth-ranked Calvin took seventh in a 25-team field with 187 points. The University of Minnesota took first with 30 points with the University of Wisconsin taking second with 62 points. Calvin sophomore Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) led Calvin with a seventh-place individual finish with a time of 25:11. Kok had the second-fastest time of any Division III runner, surpassed only by Tom Kreger of Hamline who placed sixth in 25:08. Sophomore David Haagsma (South Christian HS) also had a strong day for the Knights, placing 27th individually with a time of 25:41. Junior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) was 55th in 26:12; junior Brian Paff (National City, CA) 56th in 26:13 and senior Josh VanderWiele () in 26:17 to round out Calvin’s top-five.

“Hendrik and David had great afternoons and showed that they are capable of doing some great things at the end of the year,” said Calvin men’s cross country coach Brian Diemer. “We’re also hoping to close the time gap in our lead pack in the next few weeks.”

Both Calvin teams will send junior varsity contingents to the Eastern Michigan Invitational next Friday. The Calvin varsity teams will return to action on November 2 when they compete at the MIAA Championships hosted by Alma College.

    MEN’S SOCCER

Calvin picked up its second straight victory with a 2-1 win over conference foe Albion Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. With the win, Calvin moved into sole possession of fourth place in the MIAA standings and reached the double-digit plateau in victories for the fifth straight year and for the 26th year overall.

Calvin (10-6 overall, 5-4 MIAA) gained the win in come-from-behind fashion as Albion took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Marcus Boynton in the 28th minute of play. Calvin knotted the score at 1-1 on an Albion miscue with 8:03 left in the first half. On the play, Albion goaltender David Melotti attempted to clear the ball from the goalmouth but Melotti’s kick ricocheted off the back of Calvin junior Geol Scheirman (Broomfield, CO), up and over the head of Melotti and into the net.

Calvin then took control of the game in the second half, peppering Melotti with a flurry of shots and finally broke through with 9:31 left in regulation as junior David DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian HS) served a well-placed back pass to sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) at the 10-yard line. Veldhouse one-timed the DeBoer pass past Melotti and into the corner of the Albion net to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage. The goal was the 16th of the year for Veldhouse who leads the Knights and the MIAA in scoring.

Calvin held control through the remainder of the match to close out the win.

Calvin outshot Albion 18-9 with senior goaltender Justin Bouw (Unity Christian) collecting a pair of saves in goal for the Knights. Melotti had 11 saves in defeat for Albion.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin Field. The game will be broadcast via Real Audio at ww.Calvin.edu/sports.
