WOMEN’S SOCCER
GRAND RAPIDS – A spirited overtime effort was not enough for the Knights as
Calvin tied the visiting Flying Dutch 2-2 Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Not even two ten minute overtime sessions could separate Calvin and Hope after
the Knights struck twice in the first half and the Dutch scored twice in the
second half.
Although she was severely marked the entire game senior Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan) was able to net a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Stephanie
Kooima (Unity Christian) put the Knights on the board first as she took perfect
pass from Dyk and netted her fourth goal of the season. It was Dyk’s turn next
as freshman Kara Zuidema (San Marcos, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian) started the
rush down the right side and crossed a ball over the middle, which was
redirected to the feet of Dyk by senior Heather Van Vugt (Brookfield,
WI/Brookfield East). The goal for Dyk was her 15th of the season while her
assist was the eleventh of the season. Dyk is the MIAA leader in goals (13),
assists (7), and points (33).
Hope responded promptly in the second half, scoring two goals in the first ten
minutes of the second half. The Flying Dutch’s first goal came off the head of
Tess Scholz (Portage Northern) as she was able to net the corner kick struck by
Dawn Gilliam (Portage Noethern). At the 55:32 mark Gilliam struck again, this
time on a 35 yard direct kick. Her perfectly struck ball, knuckled just under
the upper left corner of the Calvin goal, knotting the game at two apiece.
While Calvin had more opportunities in the two overtime sessions, it was not
able to capitalize on any of them. On more than one occasion the Knights had the
Dutch goalkeeper down but were not able to find the back of the net, because of
stellar defense applied by Hope.
Calvin will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Adrian for a 4 PM
contest.
