CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY October 11, 2002
VOLLEYBALL
Two games in a night proved to be the catalyst the Knights needed as they
dropped league foe Olivet College 30-13, 30-28, 30-18, and non-league opponent
Mid-American Nazarene University 22-30, 31-29, 30-22, 30-17.
In the match against Olivet Calvin was led by senior outside hitter Cassie
Christopher (Fruitport) as she tallied 14 kills, six service aces, and four
blocks. Checking in right behind Christopher was sophomore Kara Kuipers (Unity
Christian), who had 13 kills while senior Melissa Pell (Fremont) amassed 10
kills and seven blocks. Senior setter Laura Tucker (Holland Christian) dished
out 45 assists.
Coming into the match Mid-American was ranked sixth in the NAIA Region V with a
17-8 record. Leading the way for the Knights was Christopher, recording 17
kills, 25 digs, and four service aces. Sophomore Kathy Brenneman (North
Muskegon) had 15 kills as did Kuipers who also added three service aces and
three blocks. Sophomore Trisha Balkema (Illiana Christian) notched 33 digs from
her libero position. Tucker added 61 assists.
Calvin will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Kalamazoo College in a
pivotal MIAA match. Game time is 6:30 pm.
