CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR Saturday October 5, 2002
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin used good solid defense and a vicious scoring attack to down the
visiting Tri-State Thunder 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. The victory, which
improves the Knight's overall record to 8-4 on the season, was their fourth in
their last five chances.
Calvin got on the board early with a goal by sophomore Joel Veldhouse (Sioux
Falls Christian) at the 16:04 mark with the assist going to sophomore Joel
VandeKopple (Grand Rapids Christian). The goal for Veldhouse was his
team-leading 13th tally of the season The Knights took the 1-0 lead into
halftime and into much of the second half until Calvin junior Dave DeBoer
(Western Michigan Christian) worked a highlight-reel quality goal into the back
of the net. After receiving a lead pass from Veldhouse, DeBoer quickly moved the
ball around the Thunder goalkeeper, and patiently beat two Tri-State defenders
and tucked the ball into the side of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Calvin freshman Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) notched the shutout in goal
as he recorded 1 save. Calvin also outshot the Thunder 9-5.
The Knights will return to action next week for a pair of must-win games on the
road. Tuesday, the Knights will travel to Kalamazoo College for a league match
up scheduled to start at 4 PM. Calvin will also travel to league leading Hope
College for a showdown with the Dutchmen on Saturday, starting at 1:30 PM.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin's road woes continued Saturday morning as it tied St. Mary's College
1-1. The Knight's record on the road this year is a dismal 1-3-1, as the tie
also breaks Calvin's four-game win streak.
The defense and goalkeepers performed at top notch throughout the entire first
half and sent the game into halftime with a 0-0 tie. The second half scoring
was opened by Calvin in the 61st minute when senior Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan
Christian) scored an unassisted goal, giving her eleven for the season. The
Belle's were later rewarded a penalty kick because of a Calvin hand-ball in
the goal box. St. Mary's point leader Jen Concannon was able to slip the ball
past senior goalkeeper Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) to tie the score at
one. The teams would then play to a stalemate through two overtime periods.
VanderPloeg recorded thirteen saves in the game, while the rest of the Knights
fired off thirty shots.
Calvin's record moves to 7-3-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the MIAA. They now trail
Hope by a point and lead Albion by a point in the MIAA race. St. Mary's goes
to 4-5-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the MIAA.
