    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2002

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

    The Calvin men's and women's cross country teams found the competition
    stiff at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon as the men
    took 17th in a field of 21 teams with a team score of 418 points while the women
    placed 19th in a field of 24 teams with 497 points. Both Calvin teams were
    competing in the Blue Division.

    Stanford claimed first place in both races as the top-ranked Cardinal took
    first in the men's race with 33 points while its second-ranked women's team
    took first with 21 points.

    Ranked fifth in the latest NCAA III poll, the Calvin men also finished behind
    Division III member institutions Wisconsin-Oshkosh (#1 ranked) and North Central
    (#2 ranked) as Wisconsin-Oshkosh had a strong day, placing eighth with 275
    points while North Central was 12th with 338 points. Calvin's top finisher
    was sophomore Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) who placed 60th individually with a time
    of 25:50 while sophomore David Haagsma (South Christian) was 62nd in 25:52.
    Calvin's third man was sophomore Brian Maat (Holland Christian) who placed
    97th in 26:18 with junior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian) taking 101st in
    26:22. Junior Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) was next for the Knights in 112th
    place with a time of 26:32. Junior Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) and sophomore Kyle
    Carrick (Tokyo, Japan) rounded out Calvin's top-seven as Avery was 118th in
    26:40 and Carrick 126th in 26:47.

    Junior Brian Paff (National City, CA) also placed 128th in 26:48 with freshman
    Jessie Kleinjan (Chino, CA) finishing 155th in 27:17.

    Stanford sophomore Ryan Hall was the top individual finisher as he crossed the
    line in a time of 24:10.

    In the women's race, Calvin was paced by junior Jessie Lair (Southfield
    Christian HS) who took 50th in 18:34. Junior Sarah Hastings (Traverse City
    Central HS) was Calvin's second runner, placing 83rd in 18:58 while senior
    Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) was 125th (19:27); senior Jodi VerMeulen (Holland
    Christian HS) 131st (19:31); senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) 138th
    (19:35); freshman Rachel Reed (Oak Park, IL) 152nd (19:43); freshman Camille
    Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) 175th (20:07); senior Sarah Tinholt
    (Kalamazoo Christian HS) 190th (20:41) and senior Katie VanBeek (Grand Rapids
    Christian HS) 192nd (20:47).

    Sara Bei of Stanford took first place individually with a time of 16:48.

    Both Calvin teams will now break until next Friday when they compete at the
    Michigan Intercollegiates at Kensington Park in Milford, Michigan.

    MEN'S GOLF

    Calvin took fourth at the eight-team Aquinas Invitational Friday afternoon held
    at the Kauffman Golf Club in Grand Rapids. The tournament was shortened to nine
    holes because of weather conditions.

    Calvin posted a team score of 163 strokes. Aquinas took first with a score of
    151. Calvin's top finisher was freshman Phil Rietema (Grand Rapids Baptist
    HS) with a round of 39. Other Calvin finishers include Ryan Brandsma with a 41
    and Ryan Fischer and Kevin VanHaitsma with rounds of 42.

    Calvin is scheduled to compete at the fifth MIAA tournament of the year on
    Saturday. The outing will be hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club.

    WOMEN'S GOLF

    Rain halted play midway through the first 18-role of the MIAA Championships
    Friday afternoon at the Zolner Golf Course on the campus of Tri-State
    University.

    The remainder of Friday's 18-hole round will be made up on Saturday morning
    with the second and final 18-hole round to be played in the afternoon.

    The 36-hole competition will solely determine the final MIAA team standings.
