    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT PART TWO FOR OCTOBER 2, 2002
                                     

    VOLLEYBALL

    Calvin remained in the MIAA title chase with a 30-25, 28-30, 30-22, 30-19
    victory over rival Hope Wednesday evening at the Calvin Fieldhouse in front of
    more than 400 fans.

    Calvin (14-5 overall, 6-1 MIAA) took the early momentum but Hope (8-10 overall,
    3-4 MIAA) battled back with strong front-row play in game two to even the score
    at 1-1.

    In game three, sophomore Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon HS) began to assert
    herself offensively, allowing the Knights to pull away for the win. Brenneman
    helped key a 5-0 Calvin run that allowed the Knights to build a 21-16 lead after
    the score had been tied at 16 apiece. Hope never got closer than five points the
    rest of the game as the Knights closed out the game three win.

    In game four, the Knights were able to build an 18-10 lead and then used an
    11-6 run to build a 29-16 edge. Hope scored three consecutive points to remain
    alive before Brenneman closed out the match with a powerful kill down the left
    side.

    Brenneman and senior teammate Melissa Pell (Fremont HS) led Calvin with 16
    kills apiece with Brenneman picking up eight digs and three blocks and Pell four
    digs a and a match-high nine blocks. Senior Cassie Christopher (Fruitport HS)
    was also stellar with 15 kills, 10 digs, three aces and three blocks. Senior
    setter Laura Tucker (Holland Christian HS) tossed out 60 assists for her
    second-highest single-match total of the year while also picking up eight digs
    and five blocks. Sophomore middle-hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS)
    added nine kills, three blocks and a match-high four service aces.

    In addition, junior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) amassed a match-high 24 digs
    with senior Sarah Rottman (Holland Christian HS) contributing 15 digs and two
    aces and sophomore Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) 14 digs and three aces.

    Calvin will now break until next Wednesday when it hosts league-leading Alma in
    a pivotal 6:30 p.m. match at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Alma (7-0) handed Calvin
    its only league defeat of the year, defeating the Knights 30-27, 33-31, 24-30,
    30-24 on September 4.

    MEN'S SOCCER

    Calvin picked up its second consecutive MIAA victory with a 4-1 win over
    visiting Olivet Wednesday afternoon at a rain-slicked Calvin Field.

    The victory also moved the Knights within two points of league-leading Hope
    which fell 2-1 at Alma Wednesday. Calvin (7-4-0 overall, 3-2-0 MIAA) joins Alma
    and Albion with six MIAA victory points as Alma and Albion are both 3-1-0 in the
    league.

    Calvin scored a pair of first half goals to take 2-0 halftime lead. Sophomore
    Joel Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) scored first for the Knights as he converted a
    pass from freshman John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 27th minute
    of play. Senior Aaron Bouw (Unity Christian HS) followed with a goal in the
    31st minute, one-timing a crossing pass from sophomore Joel Vande Kopple (Grand
    Rapids Christian) from point-blank range.

    Vande Kopple then came up with a full volley shot of his own in the 49th minute
    to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. The play was ignited on a perfect chip pass
    from the left wing by junior David Buursma (Western Michigan Christian HS).

    Veldhouse chalked up his team-leading 12th goal of the year on a play in the
    63rd minute as he took a perfectly placed lead pass from junior David DeBoer
    (Western Michigan Christian HS) and slipped a shot into the left-hand corner.
    The play began on a long punt from freshman goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids
    Christian) that allowed DeBoer and Veldhouse to break free on a two-on-one
    opportunity.

    Olivet closed out the scoring in the 66th minute of play as Omar Hayat headed
    in a chip from teammate Gabe Pringle.

    Calvin outshot the Comets (4-8-0 overall, 0-4-0 MIAA) 25-15 with Westra
    collecting five saves for the Knights while Willem Drogt had nine saves for
    Olivet.

    Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Tri-State University at 1:30
    p.m. in a non-conference game.

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    Calvin gained its second consecutive shutout victory with a 3-0 win at Olivet
    Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Calvin remained tied for first place in the
    MIAA standings with Hope as both teams improved to 4-1-0 in the MIAA with
    Wednesday victories. Hope was a 1-0 winner over Alma Wednesday.

    Calvin (7-3-0 overall) scored all three of its goals on restart plays. Junior
    Sara Derrico (Canondale, PA) opened the scoring for the Knights by blasting in a
    free kick from near midfield that came in the 27th minute of play. Junior
    Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian High School) gave Calvin a 2-0 lead by
    heading in a corner kick from freshman Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian HS) in
    the 38th minute.

    Dyk then repeated her feat in the 56th minute, heading in a corner kick from
    Derrico to close out the scoring. Dyk's second goal was her team-leading 10th
    goal of the year. It was also the 66th of her career and 48th career goal in
    MIAA play. Dyk is second on the all-time Calvin list in goals and points and
    third in assists. She is fifth on the all-time MIAA list in goals and points.
    In addition, Dyk currently ranks 30th among the latest NCAA III statistics in
    points-per-game average (2.78)and is tied for sixth in assists-per-game average
    (1.00).

    Calvin outshot Olivet 29-9 with senior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity
    Christian) collecting seven saves in posting her fourth shutout victory of the
    year. It was also VanderPloeg's 18th career shutout victory, ranking her
    third on the all-time Calvin list.

    VanderPloeg recently became the all-time Calvin leader in goaltender saves.
    VanderPloeg currently has 352 career saves.

    Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it travels to St. Mary's (IN) for a
    match scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. (E.D.T.).
