    Men’s Golf Team Sixth at Spring Arbor Fall Classic;
    Calvin Senior Collects Hole-In-One En Route to Finishing Second

    GRAND RAPIDS – 36 holes of continuous golf suited Calvin senior Tony Karsten
    just fine Tuesday afternoon at the Spring Arbor Fall Invitational. Spring Arbor
    hosted Tuesday’s outing at The Cascades Golf Course in Jackson.

    A native of Zeeland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Karsten
    finished tied for second place individually with a 36-hole total of 148 strokes
    that included a 77 on his first 18-hole round and a sizzling 71 on his second
    18-hole round.

    The highlight of the afternoon for Karsten came on the 16th hole of round
    number-two as he collected a hole-in-one. Karsten used a six-iron on the
    189-yard hole. The ace was the second of his career and his first in collegiate
    competition.

    “Tony had two outstanding rounds of golf yesterday afternoon,” said Calvin
    men’s golf coach Jim Timmer. “Obviously the hole-in-one was something
    special. It was exciting for him and it was exciting for our team. Tony is a
    very well-liked individual on our team and his teammates were all very happy for
    him.”

    Karsten is in the midst of a standout senior campaign as he is currently tied
    for sixth in the MIAA individual standings with a four-round average of 77.5
    strokes-per-round.

    Siena Heights shared first place with Wayne State with a score of 615. Hope
    and Spring Arbor finished tied for third at 617 while Albion was fifth with a
    total of 625 strokes. Calvin was sixth with a team score of 627. The Knights
    posted a team score of 324 during their first 18 holes of competition but then
    came back with a total of 303 on their second 18, marking the second-best
    18-hole score of the afternoon.

    Other finishers for Calvin on Tuesday included junior Ryan Brandsma (Hinsdale,
    IL) with a 157 (79/78); senior Matt Sherman (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a
    161 (87/74); junior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) with a 162
    (81/81) and sophomore Kevin VanHaitsma (Unity Christian HS) with a 167 (87/80).

    Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the fifth MIAA
    tournament of the year. The tournament will be hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee
    Country Club beginning at 1:00 p.m.. Calvin is currently fourth in the overall
    MIAA standings, three strokes behind third place Alma and 17 strokes ahead of
    fifth place Adrian.
