CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR Sept. 6, 2002
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin picked up its second straight victory over a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic
Conference opponent as the Knights handed visiting Aquinas a 3-1 defeat Friday
afternoon at Calvin Field.
Ranked sixth in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll, Calvin (2-1) opened the
scoring in the 12th minute as junior forward Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) blasted in a
shot from in close on a lead pass from junior forward Tricia Dyk (Western
Michigan Christian). Aquinas countered with an unassisted goal less than five
minutes later but a goal by freshman Jessica Kadlub (Dansville) in the 31st
minute allowed the Knights to take a 2-1 lead into intermission. The goal was
the first of Kadlub's collegiate career and came on a header as she redirected a
pass from freshman Noell Berghuis (Unity Christian).
Freshman Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) added the game-clinching goal in the 61st
minute as she whipped in a shot from the 10-yard line after receiving a
well-placed pass from Dyk.
With her pair of assists, Dyk boosted her career total to 29 assists, moving
her into a tie with Jodi VanNoord-Meyer (1995-1999) for fourth place on the
all-time Calvin list.
Senior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity Christian) picked up three saves in
between the pipes to notch her second victory of the season.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Grove City College (PA) at
noon. The contest will feature the return of former Calvin soccer standout
Melissa VanHeukelem-Lamie (Class of 1992) who now serves as head coach of the
Grove City women's soccer and basketball teams. Grove City recorded a 4-3
double-overtime victory at Hope Friday afternoon and will bring a 2-0 record
into Saturday's contest.
MEN'S SOCCER
For one half of play, Calvin had the eighth-ranked team in the country on the
ropes as the Knights held a 2-0 halftime lead over nationally-ranked
Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The visiting Titans (2-0) regrouped at halftime however and
notched a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the second half to forge
a 2-2 tie. Wisconsin-Oshkosh then scored the game-winner with just 9:55 left in
regulation to pull out the victory.
Ranked eighth in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll, Calvin took a 2-0
halftime lead behind first half goals from sophomores Joel Veldhouse (Sioux
Falls, SD) and Scott McPheeters (Flint). McPheeters assisted on the Veldhouse
goal in the 27th minute of play and then tallied an unassisted goal of his own
with just 47 seconds left in the half. A graduate of Flint Carman-Ainsworth
High School, McPheeters pounced on a loose ball that had been mishit by a
charging Wisconsin-Oshkosh goalkeeper outside the penalty box. McPheeters then
slid a low hard shot into the unattended goal for his first collegiate goal.
The goal by Veldhouse in the 27th minute of play was his team-leading fourth
goal of the year.
Ranked eighth in the latest national poll and number-one in the latest Central
Region poll, Oshkosh cranked up the pressure in opening minutes of the second
half, outshooting Calvin 7-0 through the first 15 minutes of the second half.
Oshkosh finished the match with a 19-6 shots at goal advantage include 15-2 in
the second half.
Calvin freshman goaltender Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian) suffered the
defeat in his first collegiate start but recorded a strong all-around
performance, collecting 10 saves including seven in the second half.
Friday's contest marked the opening day of the second Cal Bergsma Memorial
Tournament. Hope defeated Concordia (MI) 7-2 in the tournament's other first
round game. Calvin will face Concordia at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The Calvin men's and women's soccer games on Saturday (noon and 2:00 p.m.) will
