    Soccer Team Blank Concordia 1-0

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

Calvin captured the championship of the Wendy's Classic with a 3-1 victory
over Grove City College (PA) Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field. With the win,
Calvin stretched its win streak to three games while also handing Grove City
(2-1) its first defeat of the year.

Senior forward Tricia Dyk (Western Michigan Christian) notched a goal and an
assist in the win, allowing her to move up Calvin's career list for goals and
assists. Dyk's goal came in the 14th minute of play and gave the Knights a
1-0 lead. It also boosted her career total to 58 goals, putting her in a tie
for second place with 1995 Calvin graduate Kristin Penzotti-Mast on the all-time
Calvin list. Dyk also assisted on a goal by junior Becky Welsh (Delaware, OH)
in the 52nd minute of play that gave Calvin a 2-1 lead. Her assist was her
fourth of the year and 30th of her career which moved her into a tie for fourth
place on the Calvin career list with 1992 Calvin graduate Melissa
VanHeukelem-Lamie. Lamie was there to witness Dyk's assist as she serves as
the head coach of the Grove City College women's soccer team.

Ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region, Calvin received a game-clinching goal
by senior Stephanie Kooima (Unity Christian) in the 65th minute of play as she
cranked in a shot from 15 yards out after receiving a pass in the box from
junior Dana Haan (Lynden, WA). Also chalking up assists for Calvin on Saturday
were freshmen Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) and Karla VanBeveren (Acnaster, ON).

Grove City outshot Calvin 17-14 but senior goaltender Leah VanderPloeg (Unity
Christian) was strong in goal for the Knights, collecting eight saves. The
victory was the 27th of VanderPloeg's collegiate career and moved her to
within one win of 1991 Calvin graduate Lynn Bulten who is 3rd on the all-time
    Calvin list.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Wheaton (IL) for a match
that will begin at 8:00 p.m. (EST).

    MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin's offensive moved into high gear Saturday afternoon as the Knights
gained an 11-0 victory over Concordia University (MI) on the second day of
competition at the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Hope captured the
tournament title with a 2-1 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh Saturday in Holland.

In its win over Concordia, Calvin received hat-trick performances from
sophomore Scott McPheeters (Flint) and Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA). Cosnek
scored a pair of goals two minutes apart midway through the second half and then
completed the hat-trick with a goal five minutes into the second half.
McPheeters scored his first goal in the 44th minute, adding his second goal of
the match in the 60th minute and then scored his third goal of the game one
    minute later.

Junior Sam DeYoung (Western Michigan Christian) put Calvin on the board in the
10th minute of play, ripping in a rebound shot originally struck by freshman
Levi Kool (Holland Christian). Junior Dave DeBoer (Western Michigan Christian)
and Kool would then score goals in the next four minutes with sophomore Joel
Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) assisting on both plays. Freshman John VanWylen
(Grand Rapids Christian) and junior David Buursma (Western Michigan Christian)
also scored goals. Buursma's goal was of highlight-reel quality as his diving
header off a cross from senior Aaron Bouw (Unity Christian) found the back of
the net in the 66th minute and closed out the scoring for the Knights. Bouw had
two assists on the afternoon as did junior Jason Kastrounis (Sewickley, OA).
Other assists on the afternoon were credited to Buursma, VanWylen and junior
    Geol Scheirman (Broomfield, CO).
