CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR September 4, 2002
VOLLEYBALL
For the second straight year, Calvin tasted defeat at Alma's Cappaert Gymnasium
as the Knights were handed a 30-27, 33-31, 24-30, 30-24 loss by Alma in the MIAA
opener for both teams Wednesday evening.
With the victory, Alma remained unbeaten, improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in
the MIAA while Calvin dropped to 4-1 and 0-1 in the league.
The Knights were plagued by 14 service errors while the homestanding Scots
committed just one error from behind the service line. Calvin finished with 61
kills to the 51 accumulated by Alma but the 14 service error points proved to be
a telling tale of the match. Alma also came up with a strong defensive effort,
compiling 88 total digs.
Calvin was led in defeat by senior Melissa Pell (Fremont) who tallied 18 kills
and three blocks while sophomore Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian) compiled 13
kills and four blocks. Junior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) collected 26 digs
from her libero position while senior setter Laura Tucker dished out 56 assists.
Senior Cassie Christopher (Fruitport) added 10 kills and 17 digs while
sophomores Kathy Brenneman (North Muskegon) and Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA)
added 10 kills and 14 digs respectively.
Calvin returns to action September 10 when it travels to Olivet for a 6:30 p.m.
match.
