CALVIN SPORTS REPORT
Baseball – Calvin’s baseball traveled today, encountering Spring Arbor in a
non-league doubleheader. Game one of the match up saw Spring Arbor take an
early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Calvin tied it in the top of
the second on a solo home run by senior tri-captain Ben Dykhouse. Spring Arbor
would then open up a 7-1 lead win two runs in the third inning and four in the

with the bases loaded and next batter, sophomore Darrell Heuker, drew a walk.
Spring Arbor answered in the bottom of the inning by scoring two of its own to
extend their lead to 9-3. Calvin came up with a much needed sixth inning as
when it cut the deficit to 9-8, using a five run two-out rally. It started with
sophomore Terry O’Neal who hit a single to the shortstop. The next two batters
were walked to load the bases. Junior Arie Eppinga brought in the first run on
an error by the short stop. Dykhouse went back to work as he brought in the
next two runs on a single. Heuker then brought home the final two runs with his
double to left-center field. In the top of the seventh inning, the Knights
again loaded the bases and scored their final two runs on an Eppinga single past
the second baseman to win 10-9. Pitching for Calvin was senior Matt Schmitz,
who upped his record to 4-2 with his 2 walks five strikeouts. O’Neal ended the
day with four hits while Dykhouse and sophomore Bryce Weston had two.
Game two started with a triple by senior Mike Noorman. The next batter,
junior Tim Voss, brought him home. Over the next four innings, Spring Arbor
scored seven runs while blanking Calvin to go up 7-1. Calvin scored two runs in
the sixth as their first three batters drew walks, but were outdone in the
inning by Spring Arbor’s five run eruption. Calvin again scored two in the
seventh when the first two batters were walked and freshmen Josh Vriesman and
Tim Hansen each singled to bring in runs, but it was not enough as Calvin fell
12-5. Freshman Jay Stringer started the game for Calvin, pitching four innings
and giving up eight hits. Senior James Cottier, who pitched the final two
innings and gave up seven hits, relieved Stringer. The Knights will be back in
action against Hope this Tuesday in a nine inning battle scheduled to start at
