    REPORT FOR April 29, 2002

    SOFTBALL

The 2002 season will continue for the Calvin softball team as the Knights
gained the fourth and final seed for the MIAA Tournament this week. Calvin
gained the fourth seed by virtue of Adrian's doubleheader split with Kalamazoo
Monday. With the split, Calvin finishes one game (7-7) ahead of Adrian (6-8) in
the final regular season standings. In the event of a tie for fourth place,
Adrian would have gained the final MIAA Tournament spot due to a tie-breaker
    edge over the Knights.

Calvin will be making its first appearance in the double-elimination MIAA
Tournament since 1999. The Knights (19-15 overall) will face top-seeded Alma
(23-8) in a first round game at Alma's Scotland Yard at 1:00 p.m..
    Second-seeded Hope (20-15) will meet third-seeded Albion (26-8) in a Thursday
first round game at 11:00 a.m..

Albion is the defending MIAA Tournament champion. Calvin has won the MIAA
Tournament just once, claiming the title in 1997. Hope has four MIAA Tournament
titles to its credit while Alma has won the tourney four times and Albion once.

All of Calvin's MIAA Tournament games will be broadcast in real audio on the

SANDS NAMED MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

A week of power hitting has allowed Calvin College freshman Laurel Sands to
receive MIAA Softball Player of the Week honors for the first time in her
    career.

A native of Rockford and a graduate of Rockford High School, Sands batted .350
last week including .462 in four MIAA games. Over the course of the week, Sands
was 7-for-20 at the plate with seven RBI's, three home runs, three runs scored
and a slugging percentage of .800.

All three of her home runs came in conference games against Albion and St.
Mary's. The three home runs boosted her season home run total to five,
setting a new Calvin single-season record, breaking the previous record of four
home runs set by Laurie Hiemstra in 1987.

A third baseman, Sands had a blistering slugging percentage of 1.154 in league
games last week including .800 overall. She also had an overall on-base
percentage of .409 including .533 in league play. In addition, she compiled an
overall fielding percentage of .923, committing just one error in 13 total
    chances during the week.

Sands is among the Calvin leaders in batting average with an overall average of
.343 at the plate. She also has a team-leading 36 hits and 25 RBI's and is
tied for the team lead in runs scored with 31. She also has a team-leading
    slugging percentage of .552 overall.

Sands is the third member of the Calvin softball team to receive MIAA Player of
the Week accolades this year as freshman Rachelle Heyboer was previously named
MIAA Pitcher of the Week and sophomore Keri Cole previously named MIAA Player of
    the Week.

Alma Monday afternoon to finish with an 8-10 overall dual match record and a 3-2
    mark in MIAA play.

Calvin dropped two of three doubles points but came back to claim five of six
singles points against the Scots. Calvin will now prepare for the MIAA
