BASEBALL

A two-out two-strike home run in the top of the ninth inning allowed Grand
Valley to avoid being swept by Calvin this spring as the Lakers (23-12) edged
the Knights 8-7 Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. Earlier in the year, Calvin
had upset the Division II Lakers 11-9 in come-from-behind fashion.

On Tuesday, Calvin (23-10) nearly pulled off the same feat, battling back from
a 7-3 deficit to the game at seven heading into the ninth. With two outs in the
top of the ninth, Grand Valley sophomore Joe Brunink delivered a solo home run
over the right field wall to give the Lakers a one-run lead. Calvin then went
out in order in the bottom of the ninth as Grand Valley held on for the win.

Calvin took an early 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first and one in the
third. Sophomore Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) came up with an RBI single in
the first and junior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) a sacrifice fly in the
third.

Grand Valley answered with three runs in the fifth and then scored four times
in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. Calvin rallied with three runs in the
seventh with Heuker collecting his team-leading 28th RBI of the season in the
outburst with a run-scoring double to right field.

In the eighth, Calvin tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center field by
sophomore Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer).

Freshman Jay Stringer (Oak Hill, VA) went the first five innings for calvin,
striking out five and walking five while allowing three runs. Seniors James
Cottier (Denver, CO) and Matt Schmitz (Ionia) then came on in relief with
Schmitz (3-2) taking the loss in the ninth.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Siena Heights in a
non-conference game at 4:00 p.m..

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD UPDATE

The Calvin Sports Information office failed to report that Calvin set two
10,000 meter records Friday night at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays. As reported,
senior Joel Klooster shattered Ray VanArragon's mark in the 10K Friday night
with a time of 29:42.79, elapsing nearly 14 seconds off of VanArragon's mark set
in 1995. Klooster's time is the fastest 10K time in Division III track and field
this spring. What was failed to be reported was the school record performance of
Calvin sophomore Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian) in the women's 10,000 meters
Friday night as she took first place with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time
of 36:01.80. The time by Lair also also shattered the school record of 36:03.80
established by West Ottawa High School graduate Renea Bluekamp in 1994.

The efforts by Klooster and Lair were part of three school record performances
by Calvin distance runners Friday night as senior Sara Crowe (Grosse Pointe
Woods) also established a new school mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with
an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:43.79.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday & Friday when it competes at the MIAA
Championships at Albion College
