Klooster Shatters Calvin 10,000 Meter Record at Hillsdale Invitational
HILLSDALE - The hits keep coming for Calvin senior Joel Klooster as the
Chatham, Ontario, native came up with his second record-setting performance in a
week's time this past Friday night at the Gina Relays, hosted by Hillsdale
College. A graduate of Chatham Christian High School, Klooster shattered the
Calvin 10,000 meter record by an amazing 14 seconds Friday night, clocking in
with a time of 29:42.79. Klooster's time surpassed the previous record of
29:56.00 set by fellow Canadian Ray Van Arrragon (of Guelph, Ontario) in 1995.
Klooster's time is not only an NCAA III automatic qualifying time, but also the
fastest 10,000 meter time in NCAA III track and field this spring. His
performance came on the heels of a record-setting 5,000 meter run time of
14:25.51 at the Eastern Michigan Twilight Invitational the previous Friday.
Klooster was part of a powerful Calvin quartet in the 10K Friday evening as
senior teammate Dan Hoekstra (Kalamazoo Christian) posted an NCAA III automatic
qualifying time of 30:19.83 while freshman Brian Maat (Holland Christian) posted
a strong provisional qualifying time of 30:54.40 (four seconds off an automatic
qualifying time) and sophomore Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc) a provisional
qualifying time of 31:37.90.
The Calvin distance crew also posted a number of standout efforts in the 3,000
meter steeplechase as senior Justin Pfruender (Midland) took first in the 3,000
meter steeplechase with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of
9:11.42. Also posting an NCAA III provisional qualifying time was senior leader
Matt Sicilia (West Branch) who powered his way to an NCAA III provisional
qualifying time of 9:23.75 after a year off because of injury. Close behind and
just missing a provisional qualifying time in the event for Calvin was senior
David Ritsema (Denver, CO) who was sixth with a time of 9:25.05. Freshman Andy
Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) added a time of 9:48.79 in placing 21st.
In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Dave Haagsma (South Christian) just missed a
provisional qualifying time as he clocked in at 14:59.43. In the 1,500 meters,
sophomore Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) posted a season-best and NCAA III provisional
qualifying time of 3:52.25 in taking second place in the event.
In the field events, Calvin junior Cameron Baron (Lake Stevens, WA) produced a
season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying effort of 6-8 in winning the
high jump. In the triple jump, senior Josh Senavoe (Kumasi, Ghana) took third
(45-3 �) while junior Jon Hutchful (Accra, Ghana) took fourth (44-11 �).
A pair of Calvin athletes also competed in their first-ever decathlon and
recorded admirable performances as freshman Nate Meckes (Bay City) was sixth
(5,432 points) and senior Ben Talsma (Western Michigan Christian) eighth (5,092
points). Meckes later took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 48-6 �. In
the discus, senior Ryan Moore (Wexford, PA) took sixth with a throw of 152-3.
In the 400 meters, senior Keith Van Goor (Midland Park, NJ) took fifth with a
season-best time of 49.01 while junior Steve Abbring (Highland, IN) also had a
season-best time of 49.36 in taking 10th place. In the 100 meters, junior
Francis Ikwueme (Jos Nigeria) took fifth with a time of 11.16 while freshman
Chris Friebel (Shelby, OH) took 8th with a time of 11.19. Calvin's 4 x 400
meter relay also took first with a time of 3:25.71 while its 4 x 800 meter relay
took second with a time of 7:42.50.
In the women's competition, Calvin's distance group also had a big weekend. In
the 10,000 meter run Friday night, the Knights posted a pair of NCAA III
automatic qualifying times as sophomore Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian) took
first place with a career-best time of 36:01.80 and senior Lindsay Carrier
(Tri-unity Christian) took third place with a career-best time of 36:49.60. The
time by Lair is the fourth-best 10K time in NCAA III women's track and field
this spring. In addition, junior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) took sixth with an
NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 38:10.60. In the 5,000 meter run, 1997
Calvin graduate and former Gina Relays Most Outstanding Performer Betsy
Haverkamp-Frens took first place with a time of 16:35.40 running unattached.
Sophomore Sarah Hastings (Traverse City) took fifth with a career-best and NCAA
III provisional qualifying time of 17:33.82. Senior Erinn Boot (Kalamazoo
Christian) also clocked in with a career-best and NCAA III provisional
qualifying 17:34.84. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Calvin came up with a
pair of provisional qualifying efforts as senior Sara Crowe (Grosse Pointe
Woods) took fifth with a time of 11:43.79 while junior Tami VerMeulen (Holland
Christian) was sixth with a time of 11:48.35. The time by Crowe was also a
school record time, eclipsing her previous school mark of 11:54.90. In the
1,500 meters, junior Jodi VerMeulen (Holland Christian) had Calvin's top time as
she clocked in with a career-best time of 4:48.42.
Calvin junior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) also took part in the
two-day heptathlon competition and took third with an NCAA III automatic
qualifying total of 4,503 points. Also coming up with an NCAA III automatic
qualifying performance was Calvin senior Rachel Veltkamp (Grand Rapids
Christian) who took second in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 12-3.
Veltkamp also took fifth in the long jump (17-8, season-best). 2001 Calvin
graduate Lindsay Mulder took first in the long jump with a meet-record mark of
20-0 �. In the discus competition, sophomore Katie Corner (Catholic Central)
was second (148-10) and 11th in the shot put (39-8 �). In the 400 meter
hurdles, freshman Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) took third with a
provisional qualifying and career-best time of 1:03.68.
In the 100 meters, freshman Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) took ninth with a time
of 13.02 while freshman Anne VenHuizen (Manhattan, MT) was sixth in the 200
meters with a season-best time of 26.78. Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay also took
first with a time of 48.85.
Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare for the MIAA Championships
Thursday and Friday at Albion College. A full schedule of events can be found
