BASEBALL
ALMA - A record-setting afternoon by Calvin freshman right-hander Jim Deters
allowed the Knights to sweep a doubleheader from Alma Saturday and remain alive
in the MIAA title hunt. A 6-4 freshman from Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Deters picked up both wins in a 5-3, 8-6 doubleheader sweep of the Scots at
Alma's Klenk Park. The pair of victories allowed Calvin to take two of three
from Alma after dropping the opener 4-2 Friday afternoon. It also raised
Calvin's season record to 23-9 overall and to 13-2 in the MIAA. The 23-win
total is a new Calvin single-season record, surpassing the 22 wins achieved by
Calvin's 2000 MIAA championship team. At 13-2 in the MIAA, the Knights also
remain within striking distance of league-leading Hope which improved to 12-0 in
the MIAA with a three-game weekend sweep at Kalamazoo.
With his pair of victories Saturday, Deters raised his season record to 9-1
overall, setting a new Calvin single-season record for victories in a season.
In conference play, Deters is now 7-0, matching the MIAA single-season record
for conference victories in a season originally set by Gary Frens of Hope in
1969 when Frens posted a 7-1 won-loss mark. Deters also picked up 11 strikeouts
on the afternoon to raise his overall season mark to 86 and his MIAA strikeout
total to 59, breaking the previous MIAA single-season strikeout total of 53 held
by Greg Heeres (Hope, 1983), Andy Jacobson (Alma, 1997) and Adam Labbe (Hope,
1998).
In Saturday's opener, Deters hurled his seventh complete-game victory of the
year as he scattered four hits and struck out nine batters without a walk as the
Knights came up with the 5-3 win. Calvin took a 2-0 lead on a two-out single by
sophomore first baseman Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian) in the top of the first
inning. Alma came to score a run in the bottom of the first on two hits and a
Calvin error to slice the deficit in half. A two-run RBI double by freshman
second baseman Kyle Neher (Midland) in the top of the third put Calvin up 4-1
but Alma came back with two unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to
creep to within 4-3. Calvin then picked up an insurance run in the sixth on a
deep sacrifice fly to right by senior Mike Noorman (Covenant Christian) and
Deters responded by retiring the final six Alma batters in order to gain the
win.
Calvin picked up eight hits in the game one win with Heuker leading the way as
he went 3-for-4 at the plate while Neher when 2-for-2.
In game two, Calvin gave senior starter Andy Miedema (Unity Christian) a 2-0
lead with a run in the second and a run in the top of the fourth. Calvin scored
its first run on an Alma error that allowed senior Ben Dykhouse (Grand Rapids
Christian) to score after Dykhouse had originally reached base on a lead-off
single. Dykhouse then scored the second run of the game for the Knights,
drawing a lead-off walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Heuker and then
scoring on an RBI single to left by freshman Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO).
Calvin would not hold the lead however as Alma scored three runs in the bottom
of the fourth on three hits and one Calvin error to grab a 3-2 lead. Calvin
answered with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth, using three hits
and two Alma errors to go up 5-3. Deters then came on in relief in the bottom
of the fifth but with one out and two runners on, Alma designated hitter Ben
Wright belted a three-run homer to left to put the Scots up 6-5.
Calvin again answered the challenge as sophomore Terry O'Neal
(Muskegon-Reeths Puffer) led off the sixth with a single and moved to second on
a wild pitch. Noorman then delivered in the clutch again, sending a single into
left that scored O'Neal from second to tie the game at six. In the seventh,
sophomore centerfielder Bryce Weston (Petoskey) ignited a two-out rally by
reaching base on an error. O'Neal then drew a walk and Noorman followed with
his second hit of the game that loaded the bases. Sophomore Aaron Griffith
(Manhattan, KS) and junior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) followed by drawing
back-to-back walks with the bases-loaded to bring in two runs and put the
Knights on top 8-6. The Calvin threat was finally extinguished on a line-out to
right by Dykhouse.
In the bottom of the seventh, Alma's Nick Duflo reached base on a lead-off
single but Deters was able to get the next two batters out on a ground-out and
strikeout. Alma's Tad Jensen then sent a 3-2 pitch deep into left-center
field that Weston speared with a spectacular diving catch to end the game.
Calvin picked up 13 hits in the 8-6 win with O'Neal going 3-for-4 at the
plate with a stolen base while Noorman, Griffith and Dykhouse all had two hits
apiece.
Calvin will now prepare to host Division II Grand Valley State on Tuesday at
4:00 p.m. in a non-conference game.

SOFTBALL
ANGOLA, IN - Calvin visited Indiana today to face the Tri-State Thunder in a
non-conference doubleheader.
Game one was a Thunder victory as they defeated Calvin 5-0. Tri-State scored
one run in the second and third innings, also adding three in the fourth.
Calvin's only run came in the third inning when senior center fielder Lindsey
Heinkel doubled to start the inning. She was pushed over to third by a
sacrifice bunt from sophomore Keri Cole. A single from sophomore Trisha Balkema
then hit Heinkel home. That was all the Knights could muster as Heinkel and
Cole were the only Knights with multi-hit games. Freshman Rachelle Heyboer
pitched the first three and two-thirds innings, giving up nine hits and five
earned runs. She struck out one and walked three, dropping her season record to
10-8. Cole relieved Heyboer in the fourth inning and finished the game with
only giving up one hit.
Game two of the series saw Calvin hurt itself through poor defensive play. The
Knights racked up five errors to give up the one run margin, losing 3-2. Calvin
took the lead in the top of the third inning when Balkema flied out to left
field, bringing home Junior Emily Mejeur from third base. Tri-State answered
the call in the third when they were given all three of their runs on three
Calvin errors. The Knights added a run in the sixth inning when Mejeur singled
to bring in junior Sandy Van Leeuwen from third base, but it was too little, too
late. Kara Van Kooten pitched the complete game for the Knights, going all six
innings. Van Kooten gave up four hits and no earned runs, but dropped her
record to 2-2 with two walks and two strikeouts. The Knights collectively fall
to 19-15 on the season.
Calvin must now play a waiting game to see if it will play again this year.
Calvin still has a chance to gain the fourth seed for the MIAA Tournament next
Thursday and Friday at Alma College but to do so, the Knights need at least a
split between Adrian and Kalamazoo Monday afternoon. An Adrian sweep would
allow the Bulldogs to finish tied with Calvin at 7-7 (4th place) in the MIAA
standings. Adrian owns a tie-break edge over Calvin for the fourth seed in case
of a tie.
