BASEBALL
ALMA – The Knights traveled to Alma this evening for the opening of a
three-game series against the Alma Scots in which they were defeated 4-2 to drop
their MIAA record to 11-2 and overall record to 21-9. The Knights opened the
scoring in the second inning with a run scored by senior third baseman Mike
Noorman. Noorman reached base on a walk and stole second, then was knocked home
by sophomore Bryce Weston’s double to right-center field. The Scots
retaliated in the bottom of the inning by scoring two of their own to take a 2-1
lead. Sophomore Aaron Griffith tied the game at two when he was brought in by a
Darrell Heuker hit and Alma error. Senior tri-captain Mike Ott started on the
mound for Calvin, but was knocked out of the game in the third inning with a
sore hamstring, when senior Mike Schmitz replaced him. The Scots were able to
bring home two more runs on three doubles in the third to regain the lead 4-2.
No scoring would take place in the second half of the game to decide the game
with a final score of 4-2. Ott pitched two innings before his exit from the
game. He gave up five hits and four earned runs. His replacement, Schmitz,
pitched the final six innings and gave up four hits. Ho only walked one batter
and struck out seven. Heuker and Weston had the only double hit outings for the
Knights. Calvin will be back in action tomorrow as they face Alma in a
doubleheader slated to begin at noon. The game can be heard by real audio from
the schedule page of the Calvin baseball website.
