DAILY SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 17, 2002

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

ALBION - The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up MIAA
dual meet crowns with impressive victories over Albion and Adrian Wednesday
    afternoon.

In the men's competition, Calvin defeated the host Britons of Albion 100.5 --
53.5 in a battle of unbeaten MIAA teams. The Calvin men also topped Adrian
131-19 to finish out its MIAA dual meet season with a 5-0 record and stretching
its MIAA dual meet unbeaten streak to 38, dating back to 1994.

In the women's competition, Calvin topped Albion 127-21 and Adrian 109-16 to
also finish with a 5-0 MIAA dual meet record. The pair of victories allowed the
Calvin women to stretch their MIAA dual meet unbeaten streak to 61, dating back
    to 1989.

The MIAA dual meet standings are worth one-half of the final league crown with
the MIAA Championship meet making up the remaining half.

In the women's competition, Calvin sophomore Katie Corner (Grand Rapids
Catholic Central) continued her sizzling spring in the throws as she took first
place in the discus with a school record and NCAA III automatic qualifying mark
of 154-1. Corner's throw is the best mark recorded in NCAA III women's track
and field this spring. Corner was part of a 1-2 Calvin finish in the discus as
senior Liz Blevins (Marion) took second with a career-best effort of 129-1.
Calvin also went 1-2 in the shot put with junior Mandy VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids
Christian) winning the event with a throw of 41-2 and freshman Lisa Nanninga
(Grand Rapids Christian) taking second (38-8 ½).

Also establishing a new school record and recording an NCAA III provisional
qualifying time in the process was Calvin senior Sara Crowe (Grosse Pointe
Woods) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:54.90. Senior Rachel
Veltkamp (Grand Rapids Christian) was also a double-winner for the Knights,
taking first place in the long jump (17-2 ½) and triple jump (34-5 ¼). In the
100 meters, freshman Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) came up with a career-best
performance in winning with a time of 12.66. Freshman Linnea Butler (Shelton,
WA) added a career-best performance in winning the 800 meters with a time of
2:20.03 while sophomore Tracy Diephuis (Grand Rapids Christian) did the same in
winning the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:54.79.

Other winners for the Calvin women included junior Anna VanDrie (Grand Rapids
Christian) in the shot put (10-0); freshman Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL)
in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.42); freshman Kristen Carlson (Encinitas, CA) in
the high jump (5-0); junior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian) in the 100
hurdles (15.01); senior Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids Christian) in the 400 meters
(58.42); freshman Anne VenHuizen (Manhattan, KS) in the 200 meters (27.09) and
junior Rachel Baber (Brandon, WI) in the 5,000 meters (19:11.18). Calvin also
    captured both relay events, winning the 4 x 100 relay in 48.79 and the 4 x 400
    meter relay in 4:07.9.

In the men's competition, Calvin met the challenge of a strong Albion squad
that was bidding to snap Calvin's unbeaten dual meet streak. The Britons are
the last MIAA team to defeat the Calvin men in an MIAA dual meet, having done so
by an 86-68 score in 1994.

In Wednesday's meet, Calvin used a 33-3 advantage in the distance events (800,
1,500, 3,000 meter steeplechase and 5,000 meters) as well as a 36-28.5 advantage
in the field events to pull away for the win. In the 800 meters, sophomore
Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) took first with a hand-timed performance of 1:52.90
while senior Peter Armstrong (Lacey, WA) was third in 1:54.7. Calvin then went
1-2-3 in the 1,500 meters, steeplechase and 5,000 meters with senior Joel
Klooster (Chatham, ON) winning the 1,500 in 4:00.51; senior David Ritsema
(Denver, CO) winning the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:35.5 and sophomore Dave
Haagsma (South Christian) winning the 5,000 meters in 15:43.83.

In the triple jump, the return of a pair of Calvin individuals from injury
allowed the Knights to go 1-2 in the event as senior Jonathon Hutchful (Accra,
Ghana) captured the event with a jump of 44-6 ¾ while senior Josh Senavoe
(Accra, Ghana) took second with a mark of 43-7. In the long jump, junior
Francis Ikwueme (Jos, Nigeria) took second with a mark of 21-2 while senior
Jason DeVries (Unity Christian) was first in the pole vault (14-6) and junior
Cameron Baron (Lake Stevens, WA) second in the high jump (6-2).

The Knights were also strong in the throwing events with senior Ryan Moore
(Wexford, PA) winning the discus with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of
160-1 with freshman Nate Meckes (Bay City) winning the shot put with a heave of
    47-11.

The sprints were also fruitful for Calvin with freshman Chris Friebel (Shelby,
OH) winning the 100 meters with a season-best time of 10.99. He was followed by
Ikwueme who took second with a time of 11.07, edging out an Albion competitor by
one-hundreth of a second. The time by Ikwueme was the second-fastest
    performance of his collegiate career.

Senior Keith VanGoor (Midland Park, NJ) was also superb for Calvin as he
captured the 200 meters with a career-best time of 22.11 and the 400 meters in a
time of 49.81. Freshman Reuben Sportel (South Christian) also picked up
valuable points for Calvin in both hurdle events, taking second with a
collegiate-best time of 15.42 in the 110 high hurdles and second in the 400
    hurdles with a career-best time of 55.49.

Calvin's 4 x 100 meter relay team of Friebel, Ikwueme, junior Steve Abbring
(Highland, IN) and VanGoor also took first with a season-best time of 42.01,
missing an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance by one-hundreth of a
    second.

A group of Calvin athletes will now prepare for the Eastern Michigan Twilight
    Invitational on Friday.
